Hostess with the Mostess®

We had lots of fun coming up with some popsicle stick party crafts recently – and I’m excited to share one of my favorites with you today!

This Popsicle Stick Cake Centerpiece is surprisingly easy and super versatile. We dressed this one up in sherbet-inspired hues to match our new Popsicle Birthday printable collection, but with the abundance of washi tape patterns (and other embellishments) out there, the sky is the limit as far as customizing this design! Read on for all the details, and be sure to check out the matching popsicle tablescape for coordinating party ideas. ;)

POPSICLE STICK CAKE – A DIY TUTORIAL

by: Hostess with the Mostess

SUPPLIES:

– Jumbo Popsicle Sticks
– 2 Round Nesting Boxes
– Washi Tape
– Masking or Painter’s Tape
– Scissors
– Spray Paint
– Tissue Paper Fringe Garland
– Candy, Beads, or Gems {for optional embellishing!}

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

Project Prep:
– Measure both of your nesting boxes and figure out about how many popsicle sticks you’ll need to wrap all the way around each of them. {I found these nesting boxes at Ikea.}
– Spray paint the outside of your nesting boxes to match your color palette and let dry… unless of course they are already a color that matches, in which case you can skip this task – lucky you!

Step 1

Decorate half of your popsicle sticks in washi tape. We used 4 different washi patterns here, but you can use as many as you’d like. You only need to cover one side of the stick, as no one will see the other side. Fold the excess tape over the edges. {It’s okay if it isn’t perfect, we’re covering the tops with fringe!}

Step 2

Flip your popsicle sticks upside down and lay them on a flat surface, side by side – alternating between bare sticks and washi-covered sticks. Connect the backside of the sticks together with painter’s tape or masking tape. Continue adding sticks until you have one long section that’s long enough to go all the way around the nesting box. (Do this for both boxes.)

Step 3

Attach the popsicle sticks to both the small & large nesting boxes. You could simply use 3D glue dots to attach the sticks, OR you can make sure your length of sticks is slightly larger than the circumference of the box, connect the ends together (with more tape on the inside) and slide the sticks over the nesting boxes. Stack the small box on top of the large box… and voila – you have a cute, 2-tier cake!

Embellishments:
– Line the top edge of each box with tissue paper fringe. Attach with hot glue or glue dots & cut excess fringe off. (This can also be done before step 3, as shown in the photos – but is probably easiest after the sticks are on the box.)

– Add candies, beads, or gems to the non-taped popsicle sticks for some extra flair, set a framed photo or party sign on top, and you’re ready to party!
