May 4 is known as Star Wars Day due to its date sounding like a famous quote from the sci-fi franchise, “May the Fourth be with you.” It seems as if that day may have an additional importance added to it this year as it is anticipated that the popular video game series Disney Infinity will announce the addition of Star Wars to its ever-growing roster of playable characters and worlds.
Earlier today, a photo coming from German retailer Saturn, leaked a very official-looking photo of the Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars starter pack. As Infinity is a toys-to-life video game like Nintendo’s Amiibo or Activision’s Skylanders, two of the figures used as playable characters were revealed in the starter pack photo. The first being Anakin Skywalker from the Star Wars prequel films and the second, his apprentice Ahsoka Tano from The Clone Wars animated TV series. The packaging also reveals a crystal game piece known as a play set, which is what is used as a playable world in the game.
The illustrations on the starter pack box also reveal other possibilities for characters. The prequel saga version of Obi-Wan Kenobi is present alongside the villainous Sith warrior Darth Maul. C-3PO, R2-D2 and Princess Leia Organa of the original Star Wars trilogy are also seen on the packaging as are the iconic faces of Anakin Skywalker’s alter ego, Darth Vader and Jedi Master Yoda.
Disney Infinity hosts a weekly webcast on YouTube known as Toy Box TV and the latest episode, released today, revealed an important announcement. At the end of the episode, the show’s two hosts, Executive Producer John Vignocchi and Community Manager Allison Petrek, stated that Toy Box TV’s next episode would be moving to Tuesday, May 5 as opposed to the weekly Thursday showing. All signs point to an official announcement of Disney Infinity 3.0: Star Wars being announced on May 4, Star Wars Day, with an in-depth look and discussion on the title by Vignocchi and Petrek the next day. Infinity used a similar tactic last Spring when revealing the first teaser of Disney Infinity 2.0, which added Marvel’s super heroes and villains to the roster and featuring greater highlights of the game later on the official webcast.
Disney Interactive has remained silent on the leaked Star Wars image as well as the additional photos of future Disney Originals characters including Mulan and Olaf the Snowman leaked earlier this month, but it seems as if that silence will be broken before long. Until the release of the 3.0 edition, players can currently play both 1.0 and 2.0 versions now, available on all major gaming consoles as well as iOS and Android devices.
