Pinwheels for Peace

Bellwood Elementary fifth-graders will participate in Pinwheels for Peace, an international art and literacy project. During art classes 11:15 a.m.-noon Tuesdays-Fridays, students will create and assemble pinwheels. Parent volunteers will plant the pinwheels in front of the school on Sept. 20 so that they will be in place for International Day of Peace on Sept. 21.

Stressing the influence that parents have on teen drivers, the free program includes information about distracted driving, coaching tips for parents, an overview of the driver education curriculum, review of traffic laws governing teen drivers, information about insurance and safety reminders.

Experience the drums, horns, dance teams and precision moves of every high school marching band in Chesterfield County. The annual marching band exhibition will start at 6:15 p.m. at Thomas Dale High when middle school students from Carver and Elizabeth Davis Middle perform the national anthem. Admission is free. Concessions will be sold. Chesterfield’s high school marching bands will perform in this order: Monacan, Meadowbrook, Midlothian, Manchester, Bird, Matoaca, Clover Hill, James River, Cosby and Thomas Dale.

Wind turbine

Clover Hill High won $7,500 to install a wind turbine to provide supplemental renewable energy and to educate students and the community about energy issues and solutions. Clover Hill High is one of 88 K-12 institutions across eight states to receive a grant from the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources. Using a hands-on, minds-on approach, the Cavalier Wind Initiative will erect a wind turbine near the school’s athletic fields and football stands. The project will incorporate all areas of STEM education: science, technology, engineering and math.

From Crayons to Computers is packed with donated school and office supplies to be given away. Located in the Spring Rock Green Shopping Center at 7138 Midlothian Turnpike, the store is open to all Chesterfield County Public Schools employees 2:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when school is in session. Donations are welcome and are tax-deductible.
