Qualifications / Job Description:

The Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research (ISBER) seeks a postdoctoral scholar to contribute to the development of interactive online tools for communicating the results of sustainability research to the public. Work to be performed will advance the state of the art in policy applications of environmental research.

Researchers at ISBER completed a life cycle assessment (LCA) of used lubricating oil management in California for the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) to support recent legislation. In a subsequent project, the researchers will produce an interactive web application to interpret study results with improved accessibility and transparency, assess sensitivity to input parameters, and enable policy makers to easily update the model as new data become available. Academic research to support the project is anticipated to lead to methodological advances in LCA, including in the use of open data.

The postdoctoral scholar will work directly with the PI and California state policy makers to design and implement the tool. Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent and relevant experience in a field related to sustainability science, industrial ecology, human-computer interaction, or communication; demonstrated experience developing web or database applications; interest in policy applications of sustainability research; professional communication skills. Familiarity with life cycle assessment methodology (ISO 14044) is desirable but not necessary. Concrete experience with Microsoft SQL Server, C# programming language, and/or javascript (jQuery, D3, and similar) is preferred, but any programming or web development experience is valuable.
