Take a look at some of the projects Broward County would complete in the first five years of the proposed penny surtax, with funding provided by the half penny designated for the countywide transportation system.
Transit Service Improved and Expanded
Existing Broward County Transit (BCT) routes would be improved, and new routes would be added to satisfy riders, which are growing at a faster rate than Broward County’s population. New routes result in more bus riders and fewer vehicles on the road, which benefits all residents, including those traveling in cars and on bicycles. Proposed transit projects include, but are not limited to:
New weekday and weekend routes on major corridors currently lacking public transportation, with connectivity to regional destinations and rail system. Examples include Rock Island Rd, Nob Hill Rd, McNab Rd, Johnson St and Griffin Rd
30 miles of new Rapid Bus/Bus Rapid Transit service on SR 7/US 441 with 10-15 minute frequency during weekday peak periods, and fewer stops
More frequent bus service on routes 11, 14, 18, 19, 30, 31, 34, 42, 50, 55, 62, 72 and 81
Improved on-time performance on routes 18, 19, University Breeze and 441 Breeze
Increased morning and evening hour bus service weekdays and weekends on routes 18, 19, 42, 72, University Breeze and 441 Breeze
Addition of major regional destinations and new service to unserved markets on routes 2, 9, 11, 12, 23, 28, 40, 42, 55, 62 and 81
Restoration of 7-day and mid-day local bus service on route 23
A new Park and Ride facility, Intermodal Center and maintenance facility to support expanded service capacity and enhance customer convenience (locations to be determined)
Fleet and facility security enhancements to enhance rider safety
New technology benefiting riders at home and on-the-go, with trip planning and real time information updates at your fingertips
Light Rail Would Become a Reality
Light rail is an integral part of Broward County’s plan to increase community connectivity, reduce congestion, enhance livability and improve quality of life. Design and construction of light rail connecting our airport, seaport and Convention Center
A study to determine engineering alternatives for East-West light rail service along commuter routes
Some of the funds received from Broward County’s portion of the penny surtax will be used to evaluate areas along walk routes to schools and install school zones, school flashers, pavement markings and signage to improve safety for our children. Proposed projects include but are not limited to:
