DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) – Monroe Udell, who founded Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour in Dania Beach died in his Hollywood home Sunday after a short illness. He was 86.
The general manager of the iconic restaurant, Jerry Smith, told CBS4 news partner, The Miami Herald, Udell will be remembered for his caring heart and business sense.
“South Florida has lost a true legend in Monroe Udell,” he told the paper. “What he did for his business was equaled by what he did for the community and those around him.”
Devoted customers of the Dania Beach landmark learned about his passing on social media.
“It is with indescribable sadness and deepest regret that we inform everyone of the passing of our beloved founder, Monroe Udell, early Sunday morning. Jaxson’s will be closed on Tuesday June 3rd so that the entire Jaxson’s family can pay our respects,” the announcement on Facebook said.
Jaxson’s opened in 1956.
The ice cream parlor is best known for its antique decor, huge portions and national TV appearances on the Food Network.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, 8200 Peters Rd. in Plantation.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations go to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, 1005 Joe DiMaggio Dr., Hollywood, FL 33021.
