PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It has already been an impressive season for the Drexel women’s basketball team.

The Dragons are 20-9 and they will bring a six-game winning streak into Colonial Athletic Association tournament in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Drexel will play Delaware in the quarterfinals on Friday evening. Delaware advanced out of the first round with a 73-61 win over Northeastern on Thursday.

Drexel has enjoyed this success despite the mid-season loss of starting point guard Meghan Creighton to injury.

Dragons head coach Denise Dillon spoke with KYW Newsradio prior to the first-round action in the tournament on Thursday.  She says her team that just keeps finding ways to win.

“Every contest that we’ve had,” Dillon says, “especially starting with conference play, was a battle for us. But we stayed committed to one thing and that was playing defense, so we always put ourselves in a position to win some games and luckily down the stretch pulled out the big victories.”

Drexel is led by Sarah Curran and her 12.2 points per game while Rachel Pearson chips in 11.2 a contest.

As usual, the Dragons are getting it done with defense, holding opponents to 55.4 points per game. Dillon talks about what they have to do past that to have a deep run in the tournament,

“I think just for us to have confidence from the start on Friday evening,” Dillon says. “We have to execute well. We have to be on the same page with what we’re running and get the look that we need, that we’re comfortable taking, those shots. Even if we’re not making them early, just kind of settling in and recognizing it’s the best shot we can get. Then once the nerves and a little of the excitement wears off, you start making those shots.”

Drexel and Delaware will tip-off at 5:00pm on Friday.
