PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A ceremony in August will honors Philadelphia’s top geeks.
The nominations are in for more than a dozen categories in the third annual Philadelphia Geek Awards.
“There’s mobile apps, scientists, hacker and story of the year,” says Jill Sybesma, adult programs manager at The Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University.
She says the marquee trophy will go to Geek of the Year.
“It really is the all-encompassing geek. You’re doing things for the betterment of the city in a variety of different ways,” she explains.
Nominees for Geek of the Year are:
Matthew Akana, a molecular biologist, game designer and improv comedy performer;
Dr. Frank Lee, the associate computer science professor at Drexel University’s College of Engineering who brought PONG to 29 stories on the Cira Centre; and
Dan Ueda, a science teacher who brought the Central High School robotics team to a national competition for the first time.
Other categories include top viral project, whose nominees are the Intern Abuser app, the short film Dialog Tree which parodies choice in video games and the music video “We Are Never Going to Win With Andy.”
The awards are handed out by the Academy and the blog Geekadelphia on August 17th.
