AZUSA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say police activity just outside an elementary school in Azusa resulted in the school being placed on lockdown on Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Azusa School District says Mountain View Elementary School at 201 N. Vernon Avenue was put on lockdown at 1:05 p.m.

The situation apparently unfolded after an off-duty officer spotted a man with a gun near the campus and reported the discovery, according to school district officials.

A classroom-by-classroom search was apparently underway by police in search for the individual.

School officials also reported that an automated phone message was sent to parents to alert them of the situation.

Azusa police tweeted at 2:20 the area was determined safe.

Officers have determined the area is clear and there is no threat to safety—
