After impressing last month with the teaser trailer for “Fullmetal Alchemist,” Warner Bros. Japan has announced the live-action adaptation will premiere in Japan in December 2017.
Based on Hiromu Arakawa’s popular action-fantasy manga, the film is set in an alternate Edwardian-era world where alchemy is a science, and State Alchemists work for the government. “Fullmetal Alchemist” centers on the Elric brothers, who attempt to perform the forbidden human transmutation to resurrect their dead mother. After the transmutation backfires, severely injuring Edward and destroying Alphonse’s body, Edward sacrifices his arm to rescue his brother’s soul and bind it to a suit of armor. Edward becomes a State Alchemist, and the two set off in search of a philosopher’s stone to restore their bodies.
Directed by Fumihiko Sori, the adaptation ages Edward from 15 years old to 20, and tells the manga’s story in a single film.
Serialized in Japan from 2001 to 2010 and collected in 27 volumes, “Fullmetal Alchemist” has sold 65 million copies worldwide. The manga has inspired two anime adaptations, 2003’s “Fullmetal Alchemist” and 2009’s more faithful “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood,” video games, light novels and a pair of animated features.
Filmed in Italy from June to August, the live-action “Fullmetal Alchemist” stars Ryosuke Yamada as Edward Elric, Tsubasa Honda as Winry Rockbell and Dean Fujioka as Roy Mustang.
