BEHIND THE RALLY:

We have curated this event intentionally, holding ourselves accountable to our own mission; by selecting strong female performers who embody the message of feminism; by honoring relationships with venues and organizations and businesses who have supported us over the years; by creating an all-ages space; by fundraising and collaborating through the mighty power of music and community.

WANT TO SPONSOR OR DONATE?

Wonderful! We need you. Contact Heather at heather[at]girlsrocknc[dot]org for more information.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER AT THE RALLY?

Great! We have a list of ways you can help. Contact Roxy at volunteer[at]girlsrocknc[dot]org.

OUR JOURNEY:

In 2004, we started with one summer camp serving 26 girls. Since then, we have increased our volunteer numbers (from five to 100), camp capacities (six summer camps, two after school programs, one adult retreat) to multiple locations (Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh), and currently service over 300 girls and women each year. But we are not complacent; rather, we are eager to grow.

WHY DO WE FUNDRAISE?

We are a non-profit and every cent we make is earned through fee-for-service programs, grants, and generous donations from our community.

OUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE:

Our long-term strategic plans include leasing/owning a building near a bus line, launching a sustainer program, providing more year-round staff positions with health benefits, acquiring more reliable music equipment, providing more camper scholarships, and one day offering free year-round programming. It’s an empowering thought.

MISSION

GIRLS ROCK NORTH CAROLINA is a non-profit organization in central North Carolina empowering girls and women to become confident and engaged members of community through the mighty power of music! We accomplish this by focusing on the “three Cs”: creativity, confidence and collaboration.

In our ten years of programming, GRNC NC has held over forty music programs for girls in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh. Our campers have gone on to perform in successful bands and even take on leadership positions at camp. GRNC has roughly 80 active volunteers and a growing number of partners, sponsors, musicians, parents, activists, and mentors working together to build a strong community.

GRNC is committed to social justice and seeks to amplify the voices of those traditionally marginalized. GRNC is a LGBTQI inclusive and affirming organization, and strives to provide a safe, visible atmosphere for all.
ON GENDER

GRNC is most importantly a mentorship organization and we strive to provide excellent and realistic role models for all of our campers.

We invite individuals who self-identify as female, trans* or gender variant to apply for roles with direct contact to the campers during Rock Camp. This includes band managing, camp counseling, and workshop instruction.

Additionally, we welcome and greatly value individuals of any gender identity to volunteer in more indirect ways. These roles include but are not limited to: child care, (un)loading gear, design work, promotion, and more.

GRNC is an LGBTQI inclusive and affirming organization, and we are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. We appreciate your understanding, and are always interested in an ongoing conversation about gender.
OUR PROGRAMMING

GRNC’s biggest program is Summer Rock Camp for Girls, a one week summer program in which girls form bands, write original music with their peers, attend workshops, and perform their songs for the community at a concert at the end of the week. We also have a fall and spring After School Program, Women’s Rock Retreat Weekend for adults, and a forthcoming Teen Action League. No musical instruments or experience are necessary to participate in any of these programs!

HERSTORY

The first Girls Rock camp began in Portland, Oregon in 2001, energized by the Riot Grrrl movement of the Pacific Northwest and Washington, DC. In 2003, GRNC became the third organization in the nation to provide this unique programming. Founding members Abigail Sherriff, Amelia Shull, and Beth Turner held their first camp for 29 girls at Carolina Friends School. GRNC now serves over 225 girls each year with camps in Durham, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, and Raleigh.
