*Job Summary:*

This job is responsible for providing direct patient care in the ICU setting within the CNA job scope. This job is also responsible for order transcription and order entry as well as all other HUC roles. This job is also responsible for all telemetry-monitoring functions in the ICU and across the facility. The job exists to provide patient care as part of the team, meet regulatory standards for monitoring cardiac function.

This job is responsible for assisting in the delivery of non-professional nursing care in a defined care team and in accordance with scope of practice for the Franciscan Health System (FHS). An incumbent performs the basic aspects of general patient care where the services of a registered or licensed practical nurse are not required. Employees assist medical/nursing staff in the examination, treatment and care of patients, including the transport of patients and equipment and assisting in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients. Work also includes performing surveillance of cardiac rhythms at a central monitoring station, and for recognizing, recording and reporting potentially dangerous rhythm changes and arrhythmias in accordance with established standards and procedures. Work is performed under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).

Tasks are assigned by nursing staff in clear, detailed and specific instructions. Employees work as instructed and seek guidance on matters not specifically covered in the original instructions. Work is reviewed through progress checks for accuracy, adequacy and adherence to standards, instructions and established procedures.

*Essential Duties:*

* Provides patient personal care/hygiene and physical comfort, including feeding, bathing, shaving, changing clothes, bed making, ambulation, lifting, turning, moving, transferring, skin care and bowel/bladder elimination. Provides such additional care as required to meet the personal primary needs and comfort of assigned patient based on skill, ability, limitations of scope of practice and patient acuity. Prepares patient, equipment and supplies for specific procedures/examinations.
* Performs, monitors, reports and documents all clinical activities within scope of practice. Observes and reports changes in patient condition to the RN. Obtains labels and transports a variety of samples (e.g. urine, stool, sputum specimens and blood products). Provides patient information to nursing staff for inclusion in the interdisciplinary plan of care; documents relevant patient data in accordance with work unit standards.
* Assists nursing staff in the admission, discharge and transfer of patient by performing activities such as inventory/storing patient belongings, providing patient with relevant personal care/comfort items, orienting patient/family and transporting patient to room or other location using wheelchairs, stretchers or patient bed.
* Performs receptionist and support duties at the assigned unit; handles incoming and outgoing communications, transfers call appropriately, greets and assists visitors, answers questions in accordance with established procedures.
* Provides general support activities for the unit.
* Monitors patient’s cardiac rhythms and/or oxygen saturation using appropriate cardiac monitoring equipment; obtains a baseline ECG strip on all monitored patients according to department guidelines; records and posts cardiac strips in accordance with established procedures; may replaces electrode pads, wires and batteries as necessary. Updates and verifies patient data in information system; maintains unit/department specific records as assigned.
* Recognizes rhythms with the potential to alter the patient’s physiology and obtains a documentary ECG strip; immediately reports all arrhythmias to the RN responsible for the patient in accordance with established protocols.
* Maintains current knowledge of the technical operation and capabilities of the central monitoring station; maintains alarm systems according to established protocols and responds appropriately to monitor alarms; identifies/troubleshoots routine technical problems with the monitors and sends work orders for maintenance/clinical engineering repairs as necessary.
* Handles incoming and outgoing communications, answers questions and assists staff in accordance with established procedures.
* Maintains a safe work and patient environment, adhering to the hospital’s Safety, Risk Management and Regulatory Standards and if applicable infection prevention. Maintains a neat and organized work environment; orders, stocks and replenishes supplies and equipment as necessary; identifies and reports problems with supplies or equipment; enters equipment repair requests in system, tags equipment and removes from service.
* Participates in quality assurance/improvement initiatives and activities; participates in growth opportunities.
* Cultural Sensitivity and Competence: Demonstrates proper use of communication tools/materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services. Patient Population Served: Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department’s defined specific populations served.
* Performs related duties as required.

**Qualifications:**

*Education & Experience:*

* Completion of an accredited Nursing Assistant program (or military medical specialty training). Six months related work experience, preferably in a hospital setting. Graduation from an accredited monitor technician/health unit coordinator training course is preferred.
* Completion of a basic dysrhythmia interpretation course is required within six months date of hire into the position.

*License & Certification:*

* Must be registered by the Washington State Nursing Commission as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
* Current Healthcare Provide BLS certification is required.
