*Job Summary:*
The Clinical Nurse Educator functions as an expert clinician, leader/mentor, educator, consultant and/or researcher in providing nursing care and support for the Med/Surg, Intermediate and Post-Acute departments especially on the night shift. The proportion of time spent in each function may vary depending on the specialty area supported but the support needed is primarily for transferring the expert knowledge to inexperienced nurses on the night shift. The educator supports a professional practice philosophy within a shared governance system.

*Essential Duties:*

* EXPERT CLINICIAN
o Models excellence in nursing practice through use of advanced concepts and skills in the areas of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of perceived, actual, or potential health problems.
o Recognizes deviations from normal and works collaboratively with medical, nursing, and interdisciplinary team members to provide safe developmental and age-specific care to patients.
o Provides clinical support to improve patient outcomes encompassing patient satisfaction, functional and clinical status, and cost effectiveness.
o Evaluates care processes and outcomes through the care continuum and designs/implements strategies to support individuals, family units, and/or population-specific needs.
o Evaluates standards of patient care and professional practice with special attention to quality, value, cost effectiveness, comfort, safety, and cultural diversity.
o Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals, nursing literature and research. Attends related seminars/conferences. Attends unit meetings, educational sessions, and completes competencies as designated. Keeps current with all standards of practice/care guidelines, policies, and procedures. Assumes personal responsibility for professional development, practice, and education.
* LEADERSHIP/MENTOR
o Collaborates and facilitates patients’ plans of care with novice nurses.
o Serves as a role model and mentor to nursing staff by using PBDS feedback, improving critical thinking/prioritization, problem identification and management of patient care situations
+ Reviews patient assessments and documentation for appropriateness and content utilizing the nursing process in all teaching situations.
+ Provides leadership and direction during emergent situations to guide new nurses to help determine if initiation of the Rapid Response Team is appropriate.
o Leads and collaborates to ensure that standards of nursing practice and standards of patient care are developed, maintained, evaluated, and updated.
o Supports the professional practice model through active participation in Shared Governance priorities and outcomes.
* EDUCATOR
o Coaches new nurses to learn & perform procedures and treatments including using equipment according to GSH policies & procedures or unit-based competencies.
o Observes, demonstrates, and coaches new nurses in clinical skill building.
o Teaches new nurses to develop communication skills utilizing SBAR communication, TeamSTEPPS tools (huddles, briefs, CUS, debriefs) including verbal &/or written handoffs.
o Is a resource to nursing staff, nursing students, other health care professionals in the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Supports competent practice through development of age-specific resources, competencies and materials specific to the need.
o Develops, teaches, coordinates and evaluates educational programs consistent with the vision and goals of the department(s).
o Contributes to the ongoing education and professional development of nursing staff and students in area of specialization.
o Serves as a resource to community groups providing educational programs and support specific to the specialty area.
* CONSULTANT
o Participates as a member of interdisciplinary care teams and collaborates with members to problem solve complex clinical patient care issues.
o Collaborates with Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Educators/Nurse Director-PCC’s to review & provide feedback on new nurse performance during orientation process and on-going as needed.
o Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Educators/Nurse Director-PCC’s, collaborates with and provides support to the unit clinical coaches on a routine basis to provide support during this phase of orientation.
* RESEARCHER
o Applies evidence-based research concepts and findings to clinical decision-making and practice, and initiates changes in nursing practice guidelines when indicated.
o Using the eCRS competencies and unit-based competencies, supports and promotes unit-based quality improvement processes and clinical outcomes (Core Measures, Hospital Acquired Conditions, etc.) by assisting the new nurse in understanding how to apply this to daily practice. Assists with the data collection & monitoring of clinical outcomes as needed.
o Encourage staff participation in evidence-based research activities to support excellent patient care interventions and outcomes.

**Qualifications:**
*Education:*
• BSN required. MSN preferred or must be enrolled currently in a Master’s of Science in Nursing from an accredited college/school of nursing preferably with an APRN/CNS focus (clinical masters focus)

*Licensure:*
• Current licensure to practice in the state of Nebraska as a Registered Nurse.
• Basic Life Support – within 3 months
• ACLS – within 6 months
• NIHSS Stoke Scale – within 6 months
• Med-Surg Nursing certification or appropriate national certification – within 12 months.

*Experience:*
• Required 1 year experience in Med-Surg Nursing.
• Prefer 3-5 years of staff RN experience in a hospital inpatient setting.
• Utilization of conflict management skills in practice settings.

• Requires detailed knowledge of nursing practice and patient care in terms of theories and practices to serve as the resource and educator for other practitioners in area of expertise/patient populations.

• Demonstrates ability to determine appropriate courses of action in more complex situations that may not be addressed by existing policies, procedures, or protocols.

• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other departments, physicians, patients, families, outside agencies, and hospitals in the referral area.
