*Job Summary:*
Assumes responsibility for coordinating the Safety Program, serving as the designated Hospital Safety Officer and Emergency Manager for Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center. Provides leadership and direction to the Safety Program to provide a safe environment by effective leadership of the Safety Committee, and input from the Performance Improvement Council and Administration. This position reports to the Director of Operations Improvement.

*Essential Duties:*

* Provides leadership and consultation to employees, directors/departments, Employee Health and Safety programs, teams, physicians, contract hospitals and other hospitals relative to safety of associates, visitors, and the property.
o Coordinates all aspects of the Safety Council and the following subcommittees: Safety Survey Team, Worker Safety Subcommittee, Hazardous Wastes Teams, and Emergency Management Subcommittee.
o Serves as Hospital Safety Officer (with administrative authority designated in writing by the CEO) to lead and resolve critical issues related to environmental safety.
o Collaborates with departments, programs, and teams to improve the safety of the environment in which care is provided.
* Facilitates the review of policies, procedures, protocols and exposure control plans relevant to safety for employees, patients and visitors.
o Maintains the on-line Hospital Safety Manual.
o Ensures research and evidence-based guidelines are used as the basis of development and revision of policies and procedures.
o Provides for the dissemination of research and literature related to Safety and recommending, accrediting and regulating bodies.
o Maintains a current library with guidelines, regulations, and standards from governing, accrediting or recommending bodies and professional organizations to be used as a resource by hospital leadership.
* Serves as the Medical Center’s liaison when collaborating with the Health Department and other community organizations in a network of Emergency Response.
o Facilitates compliance with accrediting and regulatory bodies including CDC, NIOSH, OSHA, EPA and State and Local Health departments as well as the Environment of Care and Emergency Management standards of the Joint Commission.
* Continually evaluates the impact of new and existing programs and interventions upon environmental and employee safety.
* Ensures safety data is collected, analyzed, reported and utilized in a proactive approach.
o Rounds in assigned areas to detect potentially unsafe practices.
o Conducts annual risk assessments and program evaluations for all areas of the program, including a Hazard Vulnerability assessment.
o Coordinates the ongoing collection, evaluation and reporting of information relating to performance in the areas of utilities, security, life safety, construction, emergency management, worker safety, hazardous materials, medical equipment, and environmental safety.
+ Monitors and analyzes trends in reported injuries to Medical Center associates, collaborating with the Occupation Health nurses and Directors to conduct incident investigations as appropriate.
+ Evaluates data assimilated from above reports to make recommendations to departments, Councils, Committees, or teams regarding needed follow-up.
+ Monitors implementation of control measures, reporting, and evaluation of solutions.
+ Maintains databases of chemical inventories, blood exposures, and biohazardous waste disposal issues.
* Communicates program outcomes and activities via reports to responsible parties, team, or individuals, such as departments, Safety Council, Performance Improvement Council and Board of Directors.
o Coordinates the planning and implementing of construction projects relative to the Risk Assessment and safety surveillance activities.
o Coordinates regularly scheduled Safety Rounds in the Medical Center departments.
o Coordinates and critiques text exercises of emergency response plans.
* Regularly provides consultation to associates, coordinating committees, Directors, Administration and the Board of Directors to guide actions related to safety of the environment.
o Develops, facilitates and presents educational programs related to environmental safety issues, including New Associate Orientation, annual education, and education of Medical Center employees, patients and community.
o Assists with the identification of education needs and facilitates program development designed to reduce safety risks.
o Educates and mentors the department Safety Champion Program in measures of moving patients safely.
o Utilizes clinical and problem-solving expertise and specialization to improve safety for health care providers.
o Responds to interdisciplinary requests for consultation/information regarding best practice.
o Serves as a safety resource for hospital associates, developing and implementing strategies for resolving safety issues.
* Assumes administrative responsibilities when requested
* Supports the development of the department’s self-directed work team. Operates in accordance with the team’s mission and charter. Participates in departmental projects to improve processes. Assists the team in meeting annual goals.
* Serves as a role model both clinically and professionally.

Hours: Varies according to schedules, 0800-1600 hours.

**Qualifications:**
Education:
Registered Nurse, Bachelor or Master of Science in Nursing or other related healthcare field.

Licensure/Certification:
1. Current nursing licensure in the state of Nebraska or related healthcare field.
2. National Incident Management System (NIMS) Certified preferred.
3. Advance Disaster Life Support (ADLS).
4. Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP).
5. Certified Safe Patient Handling Associate.

Experience/Pre-Requisites:
1. Minimum of five years nursing experience, with an understanding of the principles of adult education, data management and quality improvement concepts and methods, and knowledge of current patient care practices.
2. Must be able to take a leadership role in cost-effective prevention of illness and injury.
3. Must demonstrate understanding of healthcare, performance improvement and emergency management concepts.
4. Experience in direct patient care and Safe Patient Handling is strongly desired.
5. Experience in administration and/or education is preferred.
6. Extensive knowledge of word-processing, database, spreadsheets and graphics required.
