*MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST*
*Job Summary:*
Under minimal supervision, performs laboratory procedures, including clerical and support functions, to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. May be assigned as primary operator of specific laboratory instruments. Provides supervision of new medical technologists, medical technology students, and other support personnel.
*Essential Duties:*
* Transports, collects, receives, and prepares biological specimens for analysis using procedures consistent with safe work practices and proper laboratory technique while maintaining integrity of specimens. Accurately registers specimens obtained from outpatients and/or clients into the laboratory information systems in order to provide timely results as well as accurate billing.
* Performs analytical tests on biological specimens to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Will operate various instruments utilizing established procedures and quality control measures.
* Reviews test results for accuracy and verifies reports of patient results. Calls all established critical values to appropriate patient care personnel and documents all called critical values according to established laboratory protocol.
* Performs specimen reviews, identifies and resolves errors to ensure quality patient testing.
* Oversees the performance of laboratory procedures and provides technical assistance in the laboratory to new employees, medical technology students, and support personnel.
* Performs, analyzes, and verifies quality control results for all tests. Compares results obtained to established range to ensure proper functioning of laboratory instrumentation. Takes necessary action when results are outside of established range.
* Performs routine preventive maintenance, cleans, and calibrates laboratory instruments and equipment. Resolves technical problems using proper troubleshooting techniques.
* Documents work performed in established departmental records such as work logs, quality control logs, maintenance checklists, laboratory information system, and patient records to comply with regulatory requirements of the State of Nebraska, Joint Commission on accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, American Association of Blood Banks, and Health Care Financing Administration.
* Prepares reagents used to perform laboratory tests and determines suitability of reagents following standard laboratory procedure.
* Participates in department meetings and continuing education programs in order to remain current in the new techniques and procedures available in the field of laboratory medicine. May also participate in various hospital and/or laboratory teams in order to enhance the workplace as a whole.
* Performs testing on assigned samples from the College of American Pathologists to ensure proper functioning of laboratory instrumentation and to identify and correct technical problems.
* Participates in proficiency testing to monitor and evaluate quality of laboratory testing, to introduce new policies and procedures, and review existing procedures. Responsible for timely completion of proficiency testing.
*MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN*

*Essential Duties:*

* Must have and maintain at all times, a valid Nebraska drivers license and a good driving record.
*Hours:* Evening shifts are 10 hours and night shifts are 12 hours. Every other weekend and shared holidays.
**Qualifications:**
*MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST*
*Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required*
* Knowledge of chemistry, biology, mathematics, hematology microbiology, serology, and other scientific topics at a level normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology in order to successfully complete a supervised one-year clinical internship or certification as a Medical Technologist by HEW.
* Must be certification eligible or certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by ASCP, AMT, NCA or HEW. Certification eligible must pass the exam within 6 months of hire. A current certification must be maintained once received.
* Approximately six to twelve months training period to become familiar with hospital procedures and laboratory instrumentation. Ability to prioritize and organize assignments effectively. Ability to use computer systems and applications.
* Interpersonal skills necessary in order to effectively communicate by exchanging factual information with patients, physicians, nurses and to other health care workers when performing laboratory procedures and reporting patient results. Demonstrates a confident bedside manner in interaction with the patient.
* Analytical skills necessary in order to interpret and analyze test results and to trouble shoot extraordinary results. Ability to operate highly technical instrumentation and perform complex analysis.
* Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail 80% of the time to ensure accurate precise results.
* Ability to walk and stand 90% of the time and lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds 5-10% of the time.
* Must have and maintain at all times, a valid Nebraska driver’s license and a good driving record for those instances in which the employee must operate a motor vehicle for work purposed (i.e. transporting lab specimens, transportation to Health Fairs, or attending offsite meetings).
*MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN*
*Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required*
* Knowledge of chemistry, biology, mathematics, hematology, microbiology, serology, and other scientific topics at a level normally acquired through completion of an Associate’s Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician which includes clinical experience, or knowledge gained through a military non-degree program with on the job training.
* Must be certification eligible or certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the ASCP.
* Certification eligible must pass the exam within 6 months of hire. A current certification must be maintained once received.
* Approximately six to twelve months on-the-job experience to become familiar with hospital procedures and laboratory instrumentation, to prioritize and organize assignments effectively. And to use relevant computer systems and applications.
