Fishing Charter Fleets
Setting up your charter and what to expect
Although the amount of anglers who head for Los Cabos on their own yachts rises each year, the majority of visitors arrive by plane and hire charter boats. Guardian Angel Concierge can hook you up with a reputable fishing fleet.
There are three fishing departure areas: The Cabo San Lucas marina, the center of the fishing community; the beach at Palmilla, just outside of San Jose del Cabo at Km. 27 of the Tourist Corridor; and at Poblado La Playa, also called La Playita, two miles east of San Jose. Most charters depart at 7 a.m.; you will need to arrive at 6:30 a.m. Transportation is not included in charter rates.
There are two types of fishing boats: pangas and cruisers.
The panga is a small, open-deck boat with an outboard motor like a Boston whaler. From 18’ to 26’ in length, pangas are more suitable for inshore fishing Facilities are limited depending on the size and amenities of the boat, rent a super panga if you want a head on board and make sure your panga has a Bimini top for shade, regardless of length. Pangas are the least expensive option for fishing and run from $165 to over $200 to rent for a six-hour trip.
The cruiser is the most popular vessel for big and small game fishing capable of going miles offshore to the best fishing ground. Amenities vary depending on the size, all have bathrooms on board, and luxury cruisers will have air-conditioned cabins. The size of the boat you charter will depend on how many people will be fishing with you. For one to four people, a 28 to 32’ boat works well, but bigger boats will have a longer range and more powerful engines to get you to the fishing grounds faster. Charter boats range from 28’ and up to super luxurious yachts with every amenity you could imagine. Your fishing representative will help you determine what size is appropriate for your party. A cruiser charter for eight hours will run you anywhere from $300 and up depending on size and amenities.
No matter what type of boat you charter, you will also need to make sure that everything you need is arranged before your fishing trip. The most convenient option is to book an all-inclusive charter where everything from bait to box lunches is provided for you. Both all-inclusive and regular charters include your fishing license, tackle, captain and crew. All-inclusive charters also include bait, lunch and beverages, and cleaning and filleting your catch.
