First Thursday in Portland’s Pearl District with Artist Reid Trevarthen
Born in 1990, and a life-long resident of the Pacific Northwest, Reid Trevarthen uses the medium of collage, to visualize the interconnected and complex relationships between people, the planet, and the universe as a whole. His self-taught technique draws inspiration from the work of Chuck Close, Jasper Johns and Dali, among others. A graduate of The Evergreen State College, Trevarthen is a member of North Bank Artists Community Project in Vancouver, WA.

First Friday in Bend with the Central Oregon Studio Art Quilt Associates
This month, Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty’s Bend office will be hosting members of the Central Oregon Studio Art Quilt Associates Inc. (SAQA). SAQA is an international non-profit organization, founded in 1989 to serve artists working in the art quilt medium, as well as teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators and corporate sponsors who recognize the importance of the art quilt. Oregon has a very active community of art quilters, including SAQA members in four local groups. SAQA was established five years ago; the 40 members meet ten times annually. Unified by size (18″ by 40″ or 40″ by 18″), the art quilts are abstract and representational, appliquéd and pieced, embellished and painted, machine stitched and hand quilted.

First Friday in Vancouver with Artist Katey Sandy
Katey Sandy studied art at San Diego State and graduated with an Art Education degree. She taught junior high school art for 3 years in San Diego, leaving to start a family. When returning to work, Katey received a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and worked in that field for 35 years. Her desire to experiment, explore new ideas, and create in a variety of mediums was kept alive as I worked with young children and college students. Art was always a curriculum focus in the classes Katey taught and in the schools where she was the director. Katey returned to painting after retiring in 2007 from the Education Dept. at Warner Pacific College in Portland Or.
Katey is currently am a member of the Southwest Washington Water Color Society, the Washington Society of Artist, Columbian Art Association and Mosaic Art Alliance and teaches abstract painting & montage design for the Mature Learning Program at Clark College in Vancouver, WA. Her work is represented by the Camas Art Gallery, Camas, WA.

Third Thursday in Lake Oswego with Artist George Porter
George Porter began painting under Richard Mullins at Stanford University, where he earned a B.Sc. Bachelor of Science in Cultural Anthropology with a minor in Fine Art. He continued his art studies under Larry Gluck at Mission Renaissance in Los Angeles, where he acquired an appreciation for master techniques, doing reproductions of Rembrandt, Velasquez, Monet, Manet, Benson, Degas, Sisley and Van Gogh. George eventually moved to Oregon to raise a family with his wife. In the late 90s, he studied oil painting, once again, at Portland Community College under Joseph Mann.
Currently George’s “recapitulating” art style is a blend of classic Renaissance art, Neo-Impressionism and Luminism, with its roots in layers of colored crayons and Gerber Baby Food finger paint.His most recent painting incorporates metaphorical imagery in allegorical themes about modern American politics, drawn from both the current political theater and the devolving American culture all around us.
For inspiration, I draw on digital media content that allows me to travel in space and time, from photography taken during my own travels, from art books, and from images provided by clients for commissioned artwork. My process often involves creating a collage of landscape scenery, interweaving photography, and adding drawings to create a unique composition. I then draw the final composition by hand on a prepared canvas, and paint it with new open acrylic paints, using master techniques that I have learned over a lifetime of studying and creating fine art. The result is a treasured painting that creates a lasting memory, a tribute to beloved people, places and things, and special memories for my clients. Through this process, I not only create a beautiful work of art, but also develop beautiful new friendships and friends for life.
