Subaru isn’t one of the biggest car sellers in the United States due to the fact that they have only a small percentage of the American market – exactly 2.3%. The brand sells only seven car and crossover models and bigger companies like Toyota have more sales with only one of their models than the whole portfolio of Subarus.

Although the company isn’t as big as BMW and Mercedes-Benz it has earned more awards by independent competitions than many major manufacturers. Performance, reliability and comfort – Subaru is above all in every category. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded Subaru for a “Top Safety Car” across every model, thanks to the various crash tests it endured.

Thanks to their quality, the sales of the company have increased by 26% compared to last year’s. With a perfect strategy and limited resources, Subaru has gained more and more shares on the car industry market. They focus on innovative car features, a unique marketing strategy that sets them apart from other major manufacturers.

The newly redesigned sedan “Subaru Impreza” is one of the fastest selling cars this year with the base price of $18,000. The new model has improved fuel economy, better design, and a fancier interior. For one year, the company has doubled their sales! The small company has another hit model for the year, and it’s the Subaru BRZ which costs around $25,000.

An interesting fact about the car manufacturer is that they nearly experienced a catastrophe when the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 closed car parts factories for four weeks. The company recovered from the shock, but now they are behind with newer technologies such as the fuel-efficient cars of the other brands. Other issues of the small manufacturer are connected with their competition. A year ago, the top marketing director of Subaru was taken away by Volkswagen, and now the company aims at some of their top models, making their own look-a-likes.

The New Jersey company must find new ways to stand apart from their competitors in order to stay in this competitive market for a longer period. Subaru was created in 1968 by two business people, Malcolm Bricklin & Harvey Lamm, who started with the import of cars from Japan. Soon enough, Subaru of America became the only import car company that is publicly traded. One of the owners, Bricklin, started building his own safety cars and continued to import cars such as Fiats and Yugos.

Subaru’s marketing strategy

Equipping their cars with all-wheel drive, creating an incredible sport-utility vehicle and hiring Paul Hogan as their spokesperson, these are the few things that set the company apart, and that’s where their fame increased. The company made a tough choice to readjust their prices by decreasing them a bit. For example, the 2009 Forester was released on the market for $1,200 less than other models. The repricing was a huge blessing for the company due to the fact that sales increased to 260,000 automobiles a year

Subaru’s Expansion

The company aims to expand significantly in the next few years by investing in their factory. This summer the body assembly section will be improved to 180,000 cars a year versus 156,000 now.

With the help of Fuji, the company is going to integrate new generation engines that have a fuel efficiency of 30%, and a hybrid engine is also expected soon.

Subaru Outback Overview

Below, we are going to list the features of Subaru’s top-selling model Outback and we are going to rate them from the scale of one to ten. This way, you will know what to expect from the car in reality.

1. Space – 8.5/10

The car is quite more spacious than it’s competitors. It has enough space for legs, head and elbows for passengers. On the other hand, when you fold down the rear seats, there is enough space to store large appliances and luggage for traveling.

2. Comfort – 6.5/10

This isn’t the most comfortable car for traveling due to the fact that the engine makes a rattling sound when accelerating. The suspension of the SUV has been made firmer so that it can be more stable, but this surely decreases the comfort

3. Dashboard Design – 8/10

We are big fans of the layout due to the fact that it looks stylish and stable. The controls are intuitive and within your reach. The touchscreen’s software looks perfect and works well, but it might be kinda slow from time to time.

4. Driving – 8/10

The Outback is really easy to drive and when buying the car, we totally recommend the flawless automatic gearbox, even though it’s quite more expensive that the other version. The car is equipped with a rear camera, but there aren’t any front parking sensors available, which is a shame.

5. Pleasure to Drive – 4.5/10

The gearbox and engine combination is really comfortable and intuitive, but we can’t say the same for the suspension and traction. The rivals of the company will provide you with a lot more pleasure than the Outback and this is a huge minus for the company.

6. Endurance – 10/10

Subaru of America ranks high in the rankings for endurance. These cars are quite reliable and it’s highly unlikely to let you down. They come with five-year warranty or 100,000, which is quite more than most rivals.

7. Safety – 9/10

There is an intuitive system integrated in the Outback that consists of cameras put to prevent head-on crashes. The car also has a cruise control system for heavy traffic.

You will hear different warnings from the systems of the car and there are many airbags to keep you safe in case something happens. The camera system called Eyesight is an extra for automatic models only, so keep that in mind!

Final Thoughts

Subaru’s models are quite good for their value, but there is much to improve before they reach the height of their rivals. Some extras are essential for new cars, and they are missing. Subaru’s Outback is the perfect choice for back roads, but if you are going to travel mainly on main streets, there are better options to consider.
