Give us a little background about yourself.
I am from East Northport, NY…which is on Long Island. I grew up playing sports…soccer, basketball, volleyball, and ran track & field (just to name a few). I got my Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. After spending a semester abroad in Australia I realized two things, I loved being somewhere where it didn’t snow during winter and secondly I just loved Australia! So…I applied to graduate schools in the south or out west, I was sick of the snow. I got accepted to the PhD program at the University of South Carolina, and moved here during the summer of 2011. I have two dogs, Harley lives with me down here, and Riley lives on Long Island with my parents. Oh and I’m an only child!
How did you hear about CCF?
I heard about CrossFit through a friend who was just doing the WODs posted on the main site. I was interested and figured I would look into it and see what it was really about. I am always up to try something new so I looked up different gyms in the Columbia area and found CCF. I did the intro class and then immediately signed up for the onramp. I have been hooked ever since.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
One thing most people don’t know about me is that I love to ride horses. I have been riding horses since I was like 8, so that’s about 17 years now. I actually chose my undergraduate school based on the fact it has a nationally ranked equestrian program (I ended up not even trying out for the team). Oh and also I used to be blonde. Yeah I know that’s two.
What music can we find currently playing in your car?
It really depends on the mood that I am in but, I will mainly listen to rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eve 6, Pearl Jam, etc.) I’ll also listen to just about anything else (not a big country fan though-I know it’s the south and I should like country)
What current things are you working toward when it comes to your health, training, career or personal life?
Health & training: Just continuing to eat clean and healthy which is super easy to do while I am down here in Columbia, every time I will go home to visit friends and family I splurge a bit (can’t resist the NY pizza). I hate feeling like crap after eating crap so that also helps keep me on the healthy eating track. With regard to training, I’m working on getting stronger and improving techniques and skills. I really want to be able to free standing handstands
Career and personal life: Basically just finishing up my PhD so I can be done with school finally and start an actual career. In my personal life, I am just working towards loving life and living every day to the fullest. Not taking the little things for granted and appreciating everything I have.
Tell us about your most memorable workout from CCF
My most memorable workout….well it’s not technically a workout, but probably the most memorable thing would be competing in AND completing the Famously Hot Showdown this past August. If I had to pick one workout it would either be Murph or the 9/11 hero WOD.
Greatest accomplishment –
I like to continuously make new goals and achieve them, so my greatest accomplishment is still unknown.
What would you tell someone who is interested in Training with CCF?
Just do it. I started training at CCF a little over a year ago and now wish I had started training there when I first moved to Columbia. Okay, yes it may seem intimidating at first glance, but CCF is a huge family. Whether you can string together 20 muscle ups or can barely do a single pullup everyone is there striving to do their best. Everyone is so supportive of each other, motivating and cheering everyone else on and the support of the CCF family doesn’t stop when you leave the gym. I have met some of my closest friends in Columbia at CCF. I definitely would never think about training anywhere else!
