With all the excitement surrounding the first few days of the Paris Motor Show, the announcement of the World Car Awards 2017 nominees went by almost unnoticed.

Still, it's worth having a closer look at the lengthy list of candidates, which features vehicles from all manner of manufacturers.

The 2017 awards span five categories: the overall World Car of the Year, the World Luxury/Performance Car, the newly added World Urban Car, the World Green Car and the World Car Design of the Year.

All of the World Car of the Year entries automatically qualify for the design category, although the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet has been added as a stand-alone nominee in this category.

The first round of juror voting will take place in January 2017, with the finalists announced in February. This resulting finalist list will be whittled down to just three vehicles per category, which will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The winners will then be named at the New York Auto Show in mid-April.
