Position Overview

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Nurse. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 18 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. Recurring Part-time employee is engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Reporting to the Principle Investigator, the Research Nurse will facilitate conduct of STRIPES research study at the Alberta Children's Hospital under the supervision of the PI. Study is a pilot randomized clinical trial examining the safety and feasibility of early administration of steroids in pediatric patients with fluid refractory shock.

Research Nurse is often considered the scientific leader or expert in their area of specialization and is required to stay abreast of industry knowledge and changing trends. The Research Nurse will play a critical role in the high level leadership of the group, working closely with the Principal Investigator to determine the course of the group. This will include contributing to research and funding strategies, identifying and helping to secure funding opportunities and shaping the vision, direction and structure of the group.

The Research Nurse will play a key role in all activities undertaken by the research team spanning from hands on technical tasks to high level leadership and visioning. They will have an expert knowledge of the hands on work performed as part of the operations and development activities of the group. This position will be responsible for all project and operations level management of a lab or the group, including schedules, budgets, personnel and technical output. They will prepare and submit documentation and other deliverables, technical and financial, required by funding agencies and collaborators.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Along with the Principle Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the research project and research group

Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure

Act as primary liaison between research team, national, and international collaborators

Monitor and control the schedule, budget, quality and risk of projects undertaken by the research team

Make high risk decisions that may impact the scope, budget, and schedule of large projects

Conduct research and provide documentation for use in scholarly publications

Develop operating procedures, safety protocols, and make recommendation on workflow improvements

Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community

Demonstrate strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines

Demonstrate the understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Enrollment of patients, including screening, confirming eligibility, acquiring consent, supervising administration of study drug, collection of lab samples and patient data.

Educate staff on study details

Liaise with hospital pharmacy regarding dispensing of study drug.

Follow good clinical practice for clinical research; follow study standard operating procedures.

Assist PI in Research Ethics Board (REB) reporting

Qualifications / Requirements:

Minimum 10 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline

Previous experience in clinical research in pediatric critical care required

Project management skills preferred

Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders

Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments

Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation, and interpersonal skills

Advanced or expert skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills

Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable

A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
