Position Description
The Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Landscape Architecture. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience. We seek a colleague who can engage with local and global issues regarding urban design, regional planning, cultural landscapes, climate change, resilience, and water resources through research and creative practice in the unique regional context of Calgary, Alberta and Western Canada. You will be expected to contribute to our new professional Master of Landscape Architecture program, and also to our Master of Architecture and Master of Planning programs; and to participate in the supervision of Master’s and PhD students in the Faculty’s research-based degree programs (Master of Environmental Design and PhD in Environmental Design).

The Faculty of Environmental Design
The Faculty of Environmental Design was founded on an overarching commitment to the integration of design, ecology and culture in the making and managing of human and bio-social environments. EVDS was established in 1971, and over the past four decades, has provided an interdisciplinary approach to professional education and graduate research. As a non-departmentalized, professional graduate-level Faculty, we provide an interdisciplinary teaching and learning environment that emphasizes a cooperative, collegial approach to research, scholarship and outreach.
The Faculty has a strong history and a growing reputation in research, scholarship, creative activity and professional practice. We currently offer professional course-based Master’s degrees in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, and Planning, and research degrees at the Master’s and PhD levels. In addition to a strong regional focus in Western Canada the Faculty is engaged internationally in research and teaching in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe and Asia, and we have international study abroad opportunities in Barcelona and Melbourne.
Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Landscape Architecture
We invite applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin 1 July 2015, or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates who can work within our interdisciplinary environment and who can contribute to teaching across all Faculty programs, most specifically in the areas of site planning, landscape ecology, regional landscape planning, and urban design. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development and delivery of instruction in courses, studios, and seminars, and in the supervision of Master’s and PhD students. The incumbent will help us to develop our newly-approved Master of Landscape Architecture program, the first graduate program since 1980 to be launched in Canada. S/he will be expected to contribute to the Faculty’s core programs, and to develop a vigorous high quality research program involving creative scholarship related to his/her areas of expertise.
Applicants must possess a terminal degree in Landscape Architecture and a PhD in a relevant discipline. We expect that the incumbent should also have a strong record of professional practice and research productivity and previous teaching experience at the graduate level. Applicants should have membership in the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects or be eligible for membership.
