Position Overview
The Office of Continuing Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Education Consultant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development (CME), University of Calgary's mission is to provide leadership in education for physicians, other health care professionals and the community, thereby helping to provide the best health care to our community. The Office of CME develops and puts on 25 - 30 programs and develops 5 - 10 national programs per academic year to serve the educational requirements for approximately 5,800 physicians and allied health professionals annually.
Reporting to the Director and Associate Dean, CME, the Education Consultant position is responsible for the management of program curriculum development within CME. The Education Consultant customizes learning opportunities and programs, liaises with Faculty, and promotes activities developed by the Office of CME. The dynamic nature of the field of Medicine requires the Education Consultant to be flexible and strategic and the work requires attention to multiple deadlines and discretionary decision-making. The ability to exercise judgment is essential for many aspects of the position: resolving problems, managing conflicts, competing priorities, etc.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Act as an educational resource in the CME Office
Use connections in the local, regional, provincial, and national environment in health care to determine perceived and unperceived needs of physicians, health care organizations and other healthcare providers
Advise and/or lead in crafting high quality, educationally sound professional development activities
Act as the liaison to translate innovative ideas, programs, goals, objectives of a given program into logistics and arrangements with conference coordinators
Offer expertise in instructional design, conceptual design, and curricular design in the development of programs with stakeholders and stakeholder organizations
Play an integral role in the design and analysis of needs assessments and environmental scans for new program development
Find opportunities to incorporate principles of physician assessment and feedback into our programs
Ensure quality of programs and foster scholarship in CME & PD
Play a key role in evaluation of learning and programs
Contribute to research design and implementation for scholarly projects in CME & PD
Participate in dissemination of scholarly work in CME & PD
Lead in Ensuring Policy Adherence & Stewardship
Provide advice regarding management of fiscal considerations, timelines, project management, relationships with industry and other risk management-related activities in the development of courses
An expert in meeting accreditation standards for both Colleges, and translating these standards into practical application for all new programs
Lead course committees and advise course chairs, anticipating their needs, and potential pitfalls as a means to ensure appropriate adherence to policy, ethical standards, and responsible stewardship of funds
Support e-learning activities in the CME Office including program development work, discussion boards that might be developed in conjunction with a CME activity
Qualifications / Requirements:
Master’s degree required, preferably in the in medical/health professions and/or education
Minimum 5-7 years of recent related experience; a combination of education and experience may be considered
Strong knowledge/skill base in curriculum development and evaluation and instructional methods required
Knowledge and skill in distance education would be an asset
