Provides patient care under the supervision of a RN by assisting with the formulation, facilitation, and execution of the patient care plans. Assists with the documentation of patient data. Participates in the unit activities, committees and contributes to the unit/hospital goals. Counselors must be academically prepared to provide psychological therapeutic interventions involving patients and families. Counselors must have medical training in order to be able to perform in crisis and/or acute care environments. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care or education/training about patient care appropriate to the ages of patients served on the unit. Possesses the ability to collect, report and record appropriate data relative to age and to provide care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures and patient's plan of care; demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the age group's life span; and possesses an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients.
Essential Functions
Collects and documents patient care data with accuracy and confidentiality in all required records of the patient care process.
Communicates effectively and relates tactfully and supportively to patients and families maintaining therapeutic boundaries.
Completes competencies required for a Milieu Counselors; performs all duties of a Nursing Assistant in giving direct patient care according to the Nursing Assistant Job Description.
Facilitates therapeutic processes, group and individual.
Interacts with patients, and families to ensure therapy process and patient care plan success.
Knowledge of CCP Observation Levels and Competencies. Observes patients on 1:1 staffing
Maintains professional capabilities by continuing education process.
Makes therapeutic interventions and provides crisis management, during execution of group and individual patient treatment plans.
Observes and records patient behavior, i.e. group interventions, and individual interventions.
Participates as part of the treatment team in the development and implementation of patient treatment plans. Interacts with patient's family to ensure therapy process and patient care plan success.
Participates in committees/activities which further program development.
Participates in research projects, as required.
Provides parent and patient education groups
Provides training for new and less experienced Milieu Counselors, trainees, medical staff and new employee orientation.
With approval of a licensed health care professional, participates in the planning and implementing of therapeutic group processes.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Experience: One (1) year of directly related work experience
License/Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to collect and document patient care data with accuracy and confidentiality in all required records of the patient care process.
Ability to demonstrate customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families and staff, including high volume and stressful situations.
Ability to perform all the duties of a Nursing Assistant.
Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the safe and effective performance of the job.
Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
