BA/BS Food and Nutrition and supervised practice/internship in dietetics

& Abilities:

Knowledge and skills at entry

- Knowledge and application of nutrition science, medical nutrition therapy and clinical practice guidelines for people throughout the life cycle from newborn through old age and of human behavior and techniques for effecting behavior change.

- Ability to assess a patient’s nutritional status including patients of all ages including infants, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.

- Ability to implement and manage a nutrition care plan.

- Knowledge and application of food science

- Knowledge and practice of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for the Profession of Dietetics.

- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively in written and verbal forms with patients, employees, physicians and other medical staff and the community

- Ability to interview, teach, counsel and motivate others.

- Ability to use a computer.

- Ability to organize tasks and function independently

- Ability to communicate effectively with patients/families of all ages including infants, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.

- Ability to supervise dietetic students, interns and technicians

Knowledge and skills at full performance

- Knowledge of Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospital and CMS Standards related to clinical nutrition practice.

- Knowledge of performance improvement quality assessment processes and procedures

- Knowledge of government and community food and food related regulations, programs and eligibility criteria for food assistance programs.

- Knowledge of hospital and department policies, procedures and practices

Licensure/Registration/Certification:

Must become a Registered Dietitian and licensed with the state of Minnesota within 3 months of employment.

POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Clinical Dietitian provides in-patient and outpatient clinical nutrition services in all areas where nutrition care is needed. These responsibilities nutritional assessment, development and implementation of nutrition care plans, monitoring patient response, documentation and provision of nutrition education to patients/clients, medical staff, dietetic students/interns and the community. The nutritional care incorporates standards of medical nutritional therapy with the individual patient’s age (from infancy to old age), weight, medical, physiologic and social/cultural needs. The position participates in the development and evaluation of the patient food service to maximize nutritional intake, patient satisfaction and to assure that the nutritional content of the diets meet dietary and medical nutrition therapy guidelines. Responsibilities also include developing, maintaining and evaluating programs, policies and procedures and improvement processes to assure excellent nutrition care. The position reports to the Clinical Nutrition Manager and performs other duties as assigned.
