New Military to Civilian Employment Guide supports veterans with career transition
The guide was developed by the Canadian Education and Research Institute for Counselling (CERIC), a national charitable organization, in partnership with Canada Company, the leader in military employment transition, to provide Canadian career service professionals with the tools they need to help veterans transitioning into civilian careers.
Each year approximately 5,000 new, highly skilled veterans enter the competitive job market, and one in four will have difficulty transitioning to civilian life. Many will require help in finding good jobs after serving their country despite bringing unique skills and experiences to potential employers.
Military to Civilian Employment: A Career Practitioner’s Guide is an essential resource for understanding the unique challenges and opportunities in supporting veterans to successfully transition to civilian employment. Career coaches, counsellors, vocational rehabilitation specialists, HR professionals, hiring managers and others working with ex-military personnel will all benefit from this guide.
Users of the guide will gain insights into how to translate military experience and training into civilian terms, including “demilitarizing” resumes and matching skills with the right employers. Chapters in the guide include:

CERIC and Canada Company worked closely with the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans Affairs Canada, Military Family Services, military-friendly employers, post-secondary institutions, front-line career professionals, and veterans and their families to develop the guide. Authored by career development expert Yvonne Rodney, the guide incorporates the latest evidence-based research but is written in a conversational style, drawing on interviews with current and former service members.
The guide was officially launched at CERIC’s 10th annual Cannexus National Career Development Conference in Ottawa in January with more than 900 people in attendance. General (Retired) Walter Natynczyk, Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada was on-hand to deliver remarks during the launch as was Lieutenant-General Christine Whitecross, the Canadian Armed Forces Chief of Military Personnel.
