Reporting to the Alberta Aboriginal Construction Career Centre (AACCC) Coordinator, the Career Consultant focuses on providing culturally-appropriate employment services or educational and career development supports to Aboriginal job seekers or adult learners wishing to work in the construction sectors. The key function of the ICS is to assist Aboriginal job seekers to become employed within the construction industry or help them develop job readiness skills and literacy through a Learning Map or Industrial Career Path. This role is responsible for liaising between industry employers, Aboriginal organizations and communities, NorQuest College inter-departments, government levels and stakeholders involved with the job seeker.

The role requires multi-skill levels within a case management support system, ranging from assessments to individual education/career plans and follow-up supports during initial employment stage with mainly Aboriginal job seekers. The ICS position requires extensive knowledge of complex workloads within an Indigenous environment and can provide a high degree of diplomacy, excellent communication and relationship skills to ensure successful recruitment and retention between employer and employee. This position may require multiple cross-referrals involving urban, Metis, or on/off First Nation participants and their sponsors/ funding agents

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Review and maintain up-to-date files in database and assigned caseloads to ensure on-going case management and supports to Aboriginal job seeker

Provide assessments, co-create Learning Map or Construction Career Path to improve literacy, obtain certification and move to employment

Ensure accurate assessments are culturally relevant to each Aboriginal job seeker’s particular environment and provide appropriate cross-referrals to community resources

On-going reviews to ensure integrity of individual’s Learning Map / Construction Career Path is accurately reflecting their goals towards employment in the construction industry

Responsible for follow-up supports during initial employment stage with employee and employer

Deliver two assessments: initial to determine eligibility and comprehensive to identify culturally relevant Learning Map and future employment planning

Co-create culturally relevant Learning and Career Plan with job seeker

Provide ongoing engagement and liaison with construction industry and stakeholders to ensure knowledge reflects current employment trends in both Aboriginal and business environments

Deliver presentations to stakeholders, community organizations and internal departments

Provide education or training material to individuals or small groups

Establish and maintain network with employment and education facilities, Industry, Trade, Construction affiliates, regulatory bodies and associations, or organizations to ensure familiarity with training standards and codes

Establish and maintain network with Indigenous organizations, First Nations, Aboriginal organizations (on/off reserve), urban Aboriginal organizations, Metis organizations in municipal, provincial or national structures to ensure accurate interpretation of trends and culturally relevant approaches for demographic group

QUALIFICATIONS:

Undergraduate Degree in social work, education, business, psychology and/ or related experience in an employment program, construction industry or educational institution: combination of equivalencies may be considered

Must have direct knowledge and/or experience in construction industry

Minimum three to five years’ experience working within the Aboriginal environment, preferably with knowledge/experience of multiple sectors (education, economic development, community services, leadership, etc.)

Computer literacy: excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook), electronic database systems, PowerPoint presentations

Ability to utilize multiple standardized assessment tools: Indigenous Fusion Assessment, various literacy assessments, TOWES, Read Forward, etc. designed to provide valid information on skills, interests, knowledge, literacy /comprehension levels

Ability to utilize effective communication and interviews skills to ensure accurate, culturally-relevant interpretation of all factors (challenges, barriers, supports, observations)

Specialized Knowledge, specifically related to Indigenous approaches, research, and Indigenous environment

Demonstrated active community involvement or engagement with Aboriginal stakeholders

Ability to apply diplomacy for conflict resolution and negotiation skills in stressful situations

SALARY: $51,782 – $65,976 per annum; Commensurate with education and experience. Includes immediate participation in our comprehensive pension and benefit plans.
