National Rankings

Louisville (2-1-0) entered this week’s games ranked No. 16 in the NSCAA coaches poll and No. 20 in the Soccer America Top 25. After suffering their first loss of the season last Saturday against Butler, the Cardinals dropped nine spots in the coaches poll and 10 spots in the Soccer America poll. Neither UC Irvine (2-1-1) nor CSU Bakersfield (2-1-0) was ranked in either of the major polls entering week three of the season.

Matchup

The Cardinals dropped to 2-1-0 on the season following a 1-0 loss to visiting Butler last Saturday night at Cardinal Park. The only goal of the night came in the final moments of the opening half when Butler’s Anthony Smith, Jr., put a foot on a deep cross into the left side of the box from Vincent Mitchell and scored with just 1:02 to go before halftime.

UC Irvine enters Friday’s match at 2-1-1 following a 2-0 loss at Xavier on Wednesday night in Cincinnati. Last season, the Anteaters were 5-14-1 overall and finished last in the South Division of the Big West Conference with a 2-8-0 record.

CSU Bakersfield, the preseason favorite to win the Western Athletic Conference in 2013, enters the weekend at 2-1-0 overall after earning wins at Sacramento State (3-0) and UC Davis (2-0) last weekend. Last season, the Roadrunners were 9-5-5 overall and finished first in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Pacific Division with a 6-3-1 league mark.
