About Walmart China CSR

Walmart always considers itself a member of the local community and deems it its responsibility to give back to society. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an integral part to our business development. At Walmart, we have a specialized office in charge of CSR initiatives. Walmart’s CSR initiatives in China fall into the following five categories: sustainability, feedback to community, care for children, support for education, and disaster relief. Since its entry into China in 1996, the company has made total cash and material donations of nearly RMB 60 million to communities. Meanwhile, Walmart’s CSR serves as a good platform for employees to give back to society. For the past 13 years, Walmart employees spent over 180,000 hours in voluntary work for public interest in communities.

Walmart is committed to the ideal of sustainability in China. Our goal is to reduce impact on the environment. Walmart aims to integrate environment friendliness and social standards to our global sourcing system to build a sustainable supply chain that benefits the company, its suppliers and the communities we serve. For instance, we are working with suppliers to produce more environment friendly products and to reduce packaging. At the same time, Walmart is working actively to save electricity and water in stores. Our mission is supported by the following goals and measures: Saving people money so they can live better.

About Walmart China’s Sustainable Development

Besides providing assistance to the community and making grants, Walmart is committed to incorporating sustainability throughout its global supply chain and daily operations. Sustainability has been a global priority of Walmart since 2005. And we’ve committed to three major goals

In October, 2008, Walmart brought its top suppliers together in Beijing for the Sustainability Summit, outlining a series of aggressive goals and expectations to build a more environmentally and socially responsible global supply chain. Walmart is cooperating with its top 200 supplier factories to reach the goal of 20% energy efficiency improvement by 2012. In February, 2010, we announced a goal to eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our global supply chain by the end of 2015. This is the equivalent of taking more than 3.8 million cars off the road for a year.

Walmart’s sustainability initiatives in China are aligned with the Chinese government’s environmental, social and energy objectives. And it is fully aligned with the company’s global sustainability goals. Walmart China’s sustainability goals and key programs mainly include:

Building energy efficient storesand becoming the best-in-class sustainable retailer in China. Our goals are:

40% reduction in energy use in new proto stores against 2005 baseline by 2010

50% water use reduction in new proto stores against 2005 baseline by 2010

20% Green House Gas reduction by 2013 against 2005 baseline

By using LED lighting as general lighting, adopting energy-saving refrigeration, installing heat reclamation systems, and turning down lighting during off-peak hours, etc, up to the first quarter of 2010, we have already achieved:

38.62% reduction in energy use in new proto stores against 2005 baseline

44.5% water use reduction in new proto stores against 2005 baseline

6.08% GHG reduction in energy use in existing stores

Our Beijing Wangjing proto store has already achieved: 35% in energy reduction and 68% in water saving against 2005 baseline.
