We started the year with this roster of 24 Capitol Hill bars and restaurants to look forward to in 2014. With many of those projects already humming along in the Hill’s food and drink economy, there are still plenty more to look forward to through the rest of the year. Here is a midway-point update on opening targets and exciting new projects.

Zhu Dang — E Olive Way: “The building is in the neighborhood where he lived for years and he is already a longtime CHS reader. Now a first-time owner just needs to transform a failed Capitol Hill nightclub into Seattle’s next big thing in Chinese restaurants.” More… UPDATE: “We are definitely chugging along, and so far no catastrophic snags in construction.  It’s looking like more of an early fall opening for us, but there’s still a chance we could cruise in at the last minute of summer!”

Amandine and Slate Coffee — Chophouse Row: “The project from Bruce and Sarah Naftaly will take up residence on two levels of the Chophouse marketplace with a split ground floor/mezzanine cafe and bake shop.” More… UPDATE: Seattle Mag has the goods: “Her shop will be called Amandine and will share a two-story space with Slate Coffee, undoubtedly making it the new morning stop on 11tha nd Pike come fall. ‘It will be a very un-Seattle space,’ she says. ‘We’ll have this really long, narrow [space] and then we’ll have stairs up the side of it that go up to a mezzanine.’”

‘Bar Ferd’nand II’ Unnamed Project – Chophouse Row: “Inside this fall, you will find a project being called Bar Ferd’nand II, a 1,400 square-foot edition of the popular Melrose Euro-style bar, wine shop and cafe.” More…

Kurt Farm Shop — Chophouse Row: “The farm-to-table pioneer is now planning his food+drink return to the neighborhood with a new, teensy-tiny shop in Liz Dunn’s Chophouse Rose development on 11th Ave between Pike and Union” More…

Chop Shop Cafe and Bar — Chophouse Row: “Volunteer Park Cafe’s Burke will be front and center in the Chophouse plan. Her Chop Shop Cafe and Bar will front the project’s street level entrance on 11th Ave and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in the midst of the bustling development.” More…

Stateside — E Pike: “First-time Seattle restauranteur Eric Johnson plans to open Stateside — blending ‘fresh flavors of Vietnam with French influence’ — in a new project at 300 E Pike this fall.” More…

Omega Ouzeri — 14th Ave: “The opening of the new REO Flats preservation-minded mixed-use building on 14th Ave will include a project from Thomas Soukakos, owner of the original Vios on 19th Ave E and Vios at Third Place in Ravenna.” More…

Single Shot — Summit Ave: “Seattle food and drink entrepreneur Rory McCormick is teaming up with chef James Sherrill and longtime Capitol Hill-based photographer Spike Mafford on a ‘food-driven bar’ to replace Mafford’s gallery in the old, nearly 100-year-old masonry building.” More…

Sur 16 — 15th Ave E: “Sur 16 will be about natural America — all the recipes are a clash of the culinary techniques from when Spain conquered Mexico” More…

Ines Patisserie — E Union: “… Belaid said the new pastry shop will be open for morning croissants and baked goods. She also wants to stay open late three nights a week to serve Capitol Hill’s after dinner crowd. Customers can expect the staples of French patisserie fare: mousses, religieuse, and tarts.” More…

Nuflours — 15th Ave E: “The good news: The bakery’s ovens are ready to be fired up and the crew is hard at work in the thoroughly scrubbed and prepared kitchen creating their gluten free cookies, cakes, breads and pastries. The bad news: The buildout up front is still in planning stages so you’ll have to wait until at least the summer to stop in and hang out. In the meantime, co-owner Amanda Bedell says all systems are go in the spacious new facility and they’re ready to bake up a storm on 15th Ave E.” More…

Starbucks Melrose Roastery Project — Melrose: “By fall, the entire line of Starbucks premium reserve coffees will be roasted right here on Capitol Hill when the $57.4 billion global coffee giant opens up a new roastery and restaurant complex.” More…

Serious Pie Capitol Hill — Melrose: “Seattle’s global coffee giant is teaming up with a giant of the city’s downtown food and drink scene on his first Capitol Hill venture. Tom Douglas Restaurants plans to make its first foray into the neighborhood on the back of Starbucks as part of the company’s planned roastery project at Melrose and Pike.” More…

Stout — 11th/Pine: “At 5,700 square feet, Paul Reder’s next project is massive by Capitol Hill standards but puny compared the amazing feat of food and drink entrepreneurism he pulled off when he took over a failed Planet Hollywood and transformed into his successful downtown Seattle beer and eats concept Tap House Grill.” More…

Manao — 13th/Pine: “a Thai concept backed by restauranteurs with longtime experience with traditional more traditional Thai restaurants” More…

Kaisho — 12th/Pike: “On the other end of the investment spectrum, Kaisho should open later this summer in the former home of Boom Noodle on E Pike. Backed by the same corporate entity behind the Blue C and Boom Noodle ventures, Kaisho is the creation of Madison Holdings Chief Culinary Officer – and “former protégé of “Iron Chef” Morimoto,” apparently – Jeffrey Lunak” More…

U:Don Capitol Hill — 12th Ave: “U:Don is slated to be the first of the food and drink tenants to become resident in Capitol Hill Housing’s under-construction 12th Ave Arts project near 12th and Pine” More…

Yuzu Japanese — E Union: “Once a rumored home for McDonald’s, the nearly completed development at 10th and Union will be home to a planned Yuzu Japanese restaurant.” More…

Kukai Ramen & Izakaya — E Pine: More: Soon!

Oma Bap — 12th Ave: “Bellevue’s loss is 12th and Cherry’s gain. Hungry Seattle U students — and the rest of us — will soon have ‘a contemporary fast casual Korean’ restaurant alternative as Oma Bap is slated to move into The Douglas student housing development.” More…

Oasis Bubble Tea – E Pine: “We think it’s the right place for a smoothie and bubble tea cafe.” More…

Cherry Street Coffee — E Pine: “The new shop is slated to be part of the street-level retail inside the nearly complete Three20 Apartments building at, yes, 320 E Pine.” More…

Good Citizen — E Olive Way: “To create the homey vibe in Good Citizen, Friedman said the space will be outfitted with several different seating areas, large dining tables, and a bar that resembles a home kitchen. ‘Like going to someone’s party every night,’ he said.” More…

Lark, Bitter/Raw, Slab Sandwich + Pie — Central Agency Building: “We’ve secured a lease in the Central Agency Building (CAB), a top-to-bottom renovation and retrofit of a classic ‘auto row’ building from 30’s. It is just through the Seattle University campus from Lark, at 1132 Broadway Court (the corner of 10th Avenue, visible from Madison St), and directly behind The Garage.” More…

Meat & Bread — Central Agency Building: “M&B is in the Gas Light district, are very passionate about food and are a great compliment to Lark and the neighborhood in many ways including the fact that they are a daytime business.” More…

Monsoon expansion — 19th Ave E: “In addition to a bigger Monsoon, Banh told CHS last fall to expect a brighter, livelier space. Like his Monsoon East (2008) and Ba Bar (2011), the new Monsoon will include a full bar and an upgraded appetizer and bar menu to accompany, honed, Banh said, by the experiences he has had making the other restaurants into top-notch cocktail and dinner venues. A revamped kitchen will also have the resources needed to support an oyster bar, Banh said.” More…

Trove — E Pike: “‘There is enormous efficiency as well as the complexity in the project like ours,’ Yang says of the new project underway to create a seeming one-of-a-kind, venture with ‘four unique integrated concepts’ — 1) Korean BBQ with table-top grills, 2) noodles, 3) offerings of ice cream, frozen custards and parfaits and 4) a bar ‘featuring rare, new, and unusual beer.’” More…

He joined Ba Bar at the beginning of the year and will be introducing classic desserts like tiramisu and Portuguese flan to the pastry case.

Saint John’s knows how to kick off a new summer happy hour — with a party:
Happy hour is an essential part of Seattle living and as the sunshine makes itself a regular at the bar that couldn’t be more true. With that in mind, we’re excited to announce the launch of Seattle’s best happy hour at Saint Johns! Available for four hours — 2pm to 6pm — Monday through Friday, we’ve covered all the bases: amazing drinks, delicious bites, a shaded patio to enjoy them on, and all for prices that’d make a Capitol Hill developer blush. Highlights include our old school Crocodile Cafe Sangria for $3, a mason jar of George Dickel Bourbon Sweet Tea for $5, Frittata on Brioche for $7 and our famous Painted Hills STJ Burger for only 8 smackers. To celebrate, we’ll be throwing a party this Saturday (July 12th) from 5pm to 9pm to acquaint the world with summertime at Saint Johns. DJ Derek Erdman will provide the rock and we’ll roll on into the night. Very happily.
