A hair loss treatment indicated to cause other health problems, increasing the risk of causing long-term sexual issues. Even if statistics show that only 1.4% of men who took the drug experienced such problems, nobody wants to risk. Those men suffered long-term erectile dysfunction. This problem persisted for almost four years after they stopped taking the hair loss drugs.

The team of scientists at Northwestern University discovered the terrible effects of this drug. Apparently, 4.5% of men who used the drug developed a short-term erectile disorder. These researchers reported their data in the PeerJ magazine stating that patients who were very young were bound to experience an even higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction.

This hair loss treatment can be found under the name of Avodart, Proscar, and Propecia. They are known to contain dutasteride and finasteride. A single dose of this drug is used to treat the effects which can cause bigger problems as they grow older and their prostate grows larger. They can experience discomfort, or they may have trouble when urinating.

A much lower dose can help men annihilate hair loss. Dr. Steven Belknap, a dermatologist at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, argued that their study proves that men who use dutasteride or finasteride as hair loss treatment can suffer from erectile dysfunction. This means that those men would be unable to have normal erections for an extended period after they had stopped taking the drug.

Specialists had paid close attention to Propecia lately when New York Times quoted Dr. Harold Bornstein, Donald Trump’s physician, who claimed that the President is taking Propecia to combat hair loss. These drugs impact an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase which can convert testosterone into its active form.

The testosterone hormone has various dangerous effects on the sexual function, hair loss, and prostate. The drugs are known to cause erectile dysfunction and a low libido, decreasing the interest for sex. The Food and Drug Administration decided to change the labels on Proscar and Propecia back in 2012 to analyze the long-term effects.

Nevertheless, Belknap argued that these risks were not perfectly determined and, what is even worse, they are not always presented to men who want to take these drugs to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate or hair loss.
