Storyline: A detective and a female police officer are investigating a dreaded villain who enjoys cross-dressing.

Directed by Samir Tewari, Mr Joe B Carvalho hits theatres on the first Friday of the New Year, a time most filmmakers avoid.

Going by the trailer, you would know the film is a comedy of errors, with sense taking a backseat and confusion reigning supreme. With performers like Vijay Raaz and Arshad Warsi in the cast, the expectations from this comic thriller are high. Does the film live up to these expectations?

SPOILERS AHEAD

Despite entertaining performances by the duo, the movie fails to impress.

Mr Joe B Carvalho opens with a lame fight sequence where Soha Ali Khan makes a Dabangg-style entry. She gets down from a police jeep and beats up 20 muscular men. Soha’s dialogue delivery in the film is forced.

GOOD

The comic timings of Arshad Warsi and Vijay Raaz are spot-on. Funnies begin with the very first sequence involving Vijay Raaz.

Khurana (Shakti Kapoor) gives detective Joe B Carvalho (Arshad Warsi) his first big assignment. Shakti Kapoor manages to tickle the funny bone now and then with his performance. Sadly, most of these moments are inspired by his earlier roles (like Crime Master Gogo in Andaz Apna Apna).

Ranjeet’s small sequence in the film is interesting. He plays the owner of a firecracker shop.

Himani Shivpuri, who plays Arshad’s mom in the movie, also manages to amuse the audience.

In the second half, there is an interesting sequence where Soha tries to seduce Arshad. This is perhaps the only scene in the whole film where Soha looks interesting, only in a funny manner.

BAD

Jaaved Jaffrey has a few good moments but otherwise his scenes drag (pun intended). The only moments where the audience may pay attention are where he is talking to his imaginary parents and voicing all three.

The movie is completely predictable and the script is conspicuous by its absence.

UGLY

Soha’s acting is too forced even for the caricature of a character she is supposed to be playing. Whether she is playing a ‘Dabangg’ police officer or posing as a cabaret dancer, the actress fails to make her acts believable.

Despite decent choreography, the weird lyrics render the songs irritating.

Some interesting dialogues:

Talking to his boss, Vijay Raaz says: Humari shakal kya generator se milti hai jo humein backup me rakhenge aap?

When Arshad says he wants a ‘dhansu-Dabangg’ girl as wife, the mom replies: Salman se shaadi karna chahta hai tu! Pata nai kaisi chai banaega wo.
