The Big Data Climate Challenge, led by United Nations Global Pulse and the Climate Change Team of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, is now open for submissions.
Submit your project by 30 June 2014 to showcase at the 2014 Climate Summit at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 23 Sept 2014.
The benefits of taking action to address climate change have become ever more compelling. Many countries and businesses have realized the economic opportunities of decreasing greenhouse emissions and strengthening resilience, and are now reaping the benefits of sustainable low carbon economic growth, resilient infrastructure, new markets and jobs, energy independence, women’s empowerment, cleaner air and improved public health.
There is a need for fresh evidence that strengthens the economic case for action on climate change to show where such action is feasible, affordable and effective. The Secretary-General’s 2014 Climate Summit represents a turning point: from climate change awareness to action. Therefore the Big Data Climate Challenge (BDCC) calls upon the international academic, scientific, technology and policy communities to highlight data-driven evidence to drive climate action.
Prizes and Awards
The winning projects will be showcased at the 2014 Climate Summit at United Nations
Headquarters in New York. Winning project teams will also be provided with advisory and technical support to boost the visual communication components of their project. This will include developing or improving data visualizations to maximize impact and accessibility across audiences and media channels. Qualified submissions deemed relevant by the Technical Advisory Board will be shared globally through UN and Climate Summit media and broad public outreach.
We encourage multidisciplinary initiatives from all relevant fields to apply to the Big Data Climate Challenge. This includes but is not limited to: energy, smart cities, transportation, natural resource management, agriculture and food systems, ecology, complex systems, green data centers, recycling, material sciences, climate risk management, disaster risk reduction and resilience, architecture and design, behavioral science, climate finance, and economic drivers such as carbon markets and subsidies. We welcome any climate-related project.
