Obviously this ain’t all the female rappers out there or even close to all the ones I listen to and appreciate, but if i had to make a top list, this would be it. Also these are MY favs, so if you don’t like it, make your own post.

7. Nicki Minaj

Favorite Song: I’m Legit feat. Ciara

Favorite Album: The Pinkprint

Favorite Lyrics: They could never reach Young Nic’s magnitude
Even if they had a longitude latitude
Listen up ho this is my territory
You are my son, like an episode of Maury, like an episode of ER
Bitch I’m hotter than the D.R
When it comes to rap skill, ain’t nobody wanna see her
- No Flex Zone Remix

Why: Nicki Minaj is basically if Lil Kim & Trina had a love child. Nicki took what the others before her experimented with and found a way to make it her own. Her flow, her lyrics, her energy, her charisma and unapologetic personality she puts into her music is what makes me love her most. Only reason she isn’t higher on this list is because the other women came before her and i have a stronger attachment to those i grew up with and I think she still has improving to do. I’m still waiting for a solo album that goes as hard as her features.

6. Salt N Pepa

Favorite Song: None of Yo’ Business

Favorite Album: Very Necessary

Favorite Lyrics:

Have you ever seen a dude who’s stupid and rude
Whenever he’s around he dogs your mood
I know a guy like that, girl
He thinks he’s god’s gift to the world
You know that kind, excited all the time
With nothin’ but sex on the mind
I’m no stunt, on me you can’t front
I know the real deal, I know what they want
It’s me (why?) because I’m so sexy
It’s me (what?) don’t touch my body (boy)
Cos ya see, I ain’t no skeezer
But on a real tip, I think he’s a…tramp
-Tramp

Why: Salt N Pepa were basically the first women to come into hip hop and flip the script on misogyny in hip hop. They were one of the first, after Lyte not just to own sexuality, but they went as far as to talk about men the way male rappers talk about women in their songs. I loved them for this, to me, seeing them growing up was basically watching these three bad bitches stomp onto the scene and mollywop all these men who dominated the industry. They were quite the icons to me.

5. Eve

Favorite song: Love Is Blind

Favorite Album: Eve-Olution

Favorite Lyrics:

Meet me in the lab, pen and pad, don’t believe
Huh, sixteens mine, create my own lines
Love for my wordplay that’s hard to find
Sophomore, I aint scared, one of a kind
All I do is contemplate ways to make your fans mine
Eyes bloodshot, stressin, chills up your spine
Huh, sick to your stomach wishin I wrote your lines

- Let Me Blow Ya Mind feat. Gwen Stefani

Why: I believe Eve is a highly underrated artist overall, especially as a lyricist. She kinda perfected female gangsta rap, owned it, and frankly did it better than a whole lot of men. Eve was kind of a breath of fresh air on the scene, doing something different. Although, she did at time, her main focus was not as much about expressing sexuality it was more about expressing yourself, storytelling, hustlin, women empowerment, self respect, being confident in who you are at that moment and growing from mistakes.

4. MC Lyte

Favorite song: Ruffneck

Favorite Album: Bad As I Wanna B

Favorite Lyrics:

I need a ruffneck
I need a man that don’t stitch like a bitch
She’d tears or switch
Doin’ whatever it takes to make ends meet
But never meetin’ the end ‘cause he knows the street
Eat sleep shit fuck, eat sleep shit
Then it’s back to the streets to make a buck quick
- Ruffneck

Why: I like MC Lyte for many of the same reasons I love Salt N Pepa. She was the prequel to Salt N Pepa. She was the first to actively and vocally point out the sexism and misogyny in hip hop. Growing up, i loved her for confidence and pure rap talent, then as i got older and i actually understood what she was talking about in her music, I appreciated her much more. She also opened the door for pretty much every single female emcee that now has a career or ever attempted one. I appreciate her even more for the fact she stepped on the scene and call out all the bullshit before there were other women rappers to support or back her up, she did it alone.

3. Trina

Favorite Song: Hustling

Favorite Album: Diamond Princess

Favorite Lyrics:

Wait… for his bitch to live
Ms. Trina gotta trick up her sleeve
Open up the door I walk straight in the house
Put your man down and put my cock in his mouth (Damn)
I need a heavyweight like Georgy Foreman
To work my ocean like the Long Shoreman
I’m real successful
I live off interests
So get it right bitch I’m the Diamond Princess - Hustling

Why: BITTTTTTTCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHH. Ion even know where to start with Trina, she is everything a bitch need. She be makin me wanna do split on nigga dick while giving a lecture on sexism then get up and go fight a bitch for disrespecting me. Trina is known as the mos consistent rapper of the past decade or so and she def lives up to it. You know what you gon get when trina comes on a track. Trina was so confident in her sexuality and personality that niggas could even attempt to shame her cuz she ain’t give a single fuck, she already owned it all. Not only did Trina teach us to own our sexuality, but much like Salt N Pepa, she taught us self respect and not to give fuckboys the time of day, cuz we are deserve better as women.

2. Lil Kim

Favorite Song: Queen Bitch

Favorite Album: Hard Core

Favorite Lyrics: Who shot ya, huh / Who knows but they gotcha / Fed up, wet up / Maybe next time keep your head up – “Big Momma Thang” (Remix)

Why: Lil Kim truly is the baddest bitch. She went through hell and back working under Biggie and Diddy and she still managed to keep stay true to her own and stand out. To me, Lil Kim set the stage for women in hip hop fighting back not so much against sexism and other shit that people like Lyte or Salt N Pepa had, but really took advantage of her platform to talk about the shit that she was facing in the industry while holding her own…..She started directly dissing niggas in her songs, she started to branch out with the wild hair and clothes. You couldn’t tell lil kim nothing and that is why to this day, she is and will forever be one my favs.

1. Missy Elliott

Favorite Song: Scream a.k.a. Itchin

Favorite Album: This Is Not A Test

Favorite Lyrics:

Why: I don’t even know where to start or end with missy. Missy Elliott, more than anyone, had the most direct influence on my life both today and growing up. Missy Elliott is so multi-talented. Missy came onto the scene that was not only dominated by men, but pretty poppin with women as well, it was not an easy time to just jump in and be successful, but Missy did. Missy came on the scene and gracefully demanded respect from every person in the industry and she got it because her work spoke for itself. She is an amazing lyricist, her videos are so fucking creative and ahead of her time, she encouraged collabs . She did amazing collaborations with people like Jay Z, Eminem, Beyonce, Trina, Redman, Vybez Cartel, Da Brat, Eve, Mary J, Ciara, Monica, Fantasia, Beenie Man, Ludacris, 50 Cent, TLC Aaliyah….like the list goes on and on, she was so creative and found ways to make these complete opposite sounds work together. Missy would just invite random ass people to be in her videos for no damn reason that just to be there and niggas showed up, she taught us self respect, she was body positive, she def led the the weird futuristic tomboyish costume thing, i mean she made tracksuits a fashion item and turned a damn black trash bag into something cool. I could go on forever about Missy, but she taught me to love myself, respect myself, be confident in my body and who i am, support the people around me, try new things and not be afraid to stand out. She also was the person who inspired me to start dancing, i used to sneak up at night to watch MTV music videos and try to memorize her dance routines, and eventually led to me enrolling in classes and wanting to be a dancer. Still to this day Missy is by far the the most influential person/artist to me.

the fact that someone put this together is fucking ill.

what a good list
