These are the dark days of winter, film-wise, my friends. January and February have long been a dumping ground for some of the worst movies your local cineplex has ever seen. We’re looking at you, Mortdecai.

But luckily for you and me and movie screens, The Calgary International Film Festival – in partnership with the Globe Cinema – is bringing some of the best films of 2014 to screen in February as part of the 14th Annual Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival!

From February 20th through the 26th, The Globe will play host to the best movies Canada made last year – including Xavier Dolan’s Mommy and David Cronenberg’s Map To The Stars. Tickets are only $10 for a general adult, or $6 for child/senior and $7 for youth – and you can buy them on-line at the CIFF website.

Joining Dolan and Cronenberg in the series are; Monsoon, Sturla Gunnarsson’s powerful documentary about monsoon season in India. Felix and Meira, about a young woman exploring faith and freedom in Montreal. Sol, an alarming documentary about the increasing suicide rates in our Arctic communities. Tu dors Nicole, an absurdist look at a college grad spending the summer in her home town. In Her Place, about a wealthy couple’s attempt to adopt the unborn child of a rural teenager. The Price We Pay, which explores the dirty dealings of big business. Corbo, chronicling the radicalization of a young teen in Quebec in the 60’s.

Suspiciously absent from the Calgary leg of the festival is Violent, the Norwegian-language drama from Vancouver director Andrew Huculiak – and produced, in part, by Calgary’s very own and very wonderful Amy Darling… so I can only hope that something even more special is planned for Violent in the future.

But for now, you have 10 of the best Canadian films of last year, playing right here in your own backyard – and I can’t recommend strongly enough that you go check them out.

The TIFF Canada’s Top 10 Film Festival plays at The Globe Cinema from Feb 20th – 26th and showtimes and tickets can be found right at this here web address: http://www.calgaryfilm.com/tiff-canadas-top-ten

It’s the best chance you’ve got to see some great films while we all wait for summer blockbusters to start in… probably March or whenever summer is now.
