Flamenco Experiment Merges Film and Dance

For local flamenco artist Rosanna Terracciano, her newest work is an experiment expanding the notions of flamenco dance. Combining dance, film and live performance, We All Need to Say GOODBYE/ADIOS spawned from several recent trips to Barcelona and Vienna to create, perform and mingle with international flamenco artists sharing similar visions for experimental flamenco.

Running this Sunday, the intimate performance features Rosanna’s live performance beside her latest short dance film, which she directed, edited, choreographed for and danced in.

“I’m always curious about finding new ways to represent flamenco, with the hope of developing stronger critical engagement between audiences and the flamenco they are exposed to,” says Rosanna in a statement. “With this new work, I’m trying to offer more access points for my audiences to emotionally and intellectually connect to what they are seeing by working with the mediums of both film and dance, and by working within a more casual format outside of a more traditional theatre setting. I wanted to create an informal and particular atmosphere for experiencing my newest vision for flamenco.”

We All Need to Say GOODBYE/ADIOS runs Sunday, November 17 at the EMMEDIA Gallery and Production Society screening room (351 11 Avenue SW, 2nd floor) with showtimes at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can at the door only and space is limited.

New Money for The New Gallery

The New Gallery is always pushing the envelope with their awesome exhibitions and great artist support. And now is the perfect time to support them.

Their upcoming annual fundraiser, New Money, happens this Friday, November 15 from 8pm to 11pm at the John Snow House (915 18 Ave SW). Raffle ticket pre-sales have already begun and you can visit their website to see previews of the three letterpress prints and two t-shirts featuring work by artists Hannah Doerksen, Duane Linklater, Paul Robert and Tanya Rusnak.

My Le Nguyen’s Water Torture

TNG is an artist-run centre that exhibits innovative artists at all junctures of their careers whose work contributes to social and political discourse. They also offers internships, a curatorial development program, public lectures, a comprehensive online gallery archive and the newly opened John Snow House which is home to a library, archive and space for cultural collaboration.

And while you’re supporting all the goodness that is TNG, check out My Le Nguyen’s Water Torture exhibition that captures the overwhelming sense of alienation that routinely defines the moments in our lives. The exhibition is comprised of photographs and videos and stems from meeting with her estranged father in Vietnam.

Water Torture brings together three of Nguyen’s works that explore the constant flux of disconnect through foreign and forgotten places, identity, relationships and television screens.

Water Torture runs until Saturday, December 14 at The New Gallery (208 Centre Street SE).

Passionate about public art or just want to know more?

Join the folks behind City of Calgary’s Public Art Program this week for a free professional development session exploring temporary public art.

This Tuesday, November 12 they’ll be talking about the practice and how it is being used. Local artists including Ciara McKeown, Tomas Jonsson, Leslie Sweder, Eric Moschopedis and Mia Rushton will be on hand to talk about why it is an important form of expression. They’ll also be breaking into small groups to discuss the benefits and challenges of working in this way.

Space is limited so please register in advance by email to Lisa Hickey-Besserer.

Go Big or Drive Home

You saw them all at Beakerhead. The giant art cars – the peacock with an organ in the back and light up pipes and the hippo that spewed flames. You know the ones.

Well. Do you want to build your own?

Start with an information session next Tuesday, November 19 at Beakerhead HQ (#101, 1615 10 Avenue SW). A group of Calgary makers will be on hand to share their tales and help you get on track to create your own mutant vehicles. I expect to see the next year for the second annual Beakerhead festival.

This is a free evening but make sure you RSVP for a seat.
