Alberta blizzard causes roads and schools closures, cancels flights and makes for a long commute

The late fall Alberta blizzard is all but gone, however, anyone trying to drive in and around Calgary knows that the blizzard has left its mark in southern Alberta.

Drivers faced a challenging early morning commute after 13 cms of snow fell in the city.  City crews worked to clear main roadways in the city, but snow drifts are making it tough for drivers to navigate some Calgary streets.

The Calgary Herald reports the Calgary Police are advising people to stay home and indoors today.  “It is some of the most difficult driving conditions we have had for some time,” said Calgary Police duty inspector, Keith Cain.

Cain added that road conditions are very poor and some streets are impassable; some roads have gotten icier than they were on Monday.

Schools in the city of Calgary are open on Tuesday, however, morning school buses were cancelled.  For students who ride Calgary Transit buses, CTS is running its regular schedule, but riders can expect delays.

So far today, there are 25 cancelled departing flights leaving YYC and 25 departing flights have been called off.  If you’re flying to or from Calgary, click here to check your flight status.  The Calgary Airport Authority warns travellers that there may be delays in flight departure and arrival times and  baggage delivery.

The City of Calgary has announced a Snow Route parking ban will be in effect throughout the city beginning Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Environment Canada forecasts about 2 cms of snow to fall in the city today and a the temperature will reach a high of -14°.  However, factoring in the wind, it will feel like -26°.  The rest of the week is expected to be sunny, but cold.  Temperatures are expected to warm slightly by Saturday with an expected high of -10°.
