Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation, and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a study finding a link between obesity and gum diseases. According to researchers, about one-third of the U.S. population is obese and this demographic may be at a specific risk for gum disease.

As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/weight-loss-articles/this-common-problem-raises-gum-disease-risk) notes, obesity is already a massive health concern, raising ones risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and certain forms of cancer. Now researchers suspect a link exists between obesity and gum disease. Obese individuals bodies relentlessly produce cytokines, which are proteins known to spark inflammation. These cytokines may directly injure the gum tissues or reduce blood flow to the gum tissues, and disease can result.

As the article This Common Problem Raises Gum Disease Risk reports, half of all American adults are affected by gum disease, which is marked by chronic inflammation (an infection) that hurts the surrounding and supporting structures of the teeth. Gum disease itself produces cytokines, which further spikes the level of these damaging proteins in the bloodstream. This sets off an inflammatory chain reaction throughout the body, giving way to further health problems.

As the Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article concludes, research on the link between gum disease and obesity is still ongoing, as researchers look to find out if one condition is a risk factor for the other, or if one actually causes the other.
