According to researchers, about one-third of the U.S. population is obese and this demographic may be at a specific risk for gum disease.

Now researchers suspect a link exists between obesity and gum disease. Obese individuals bodies relentlessly produce cytokines, which are proteins known to spark inflammation. These cytokines may directly injure the gum tissues or reduce blood flow to the gum tissues, and disease can result.

Gum disease itself produces cytokines, which further spikes the level of these damaging proteins in the bloodstream. This sets off an inflammatory chain reaction throughout the body, giving way to further health problems.
