Marissa Mayer is one of the most talked-about women in the Internet and social media right now, and why not? She is the new Chief Executive Officer of the pioneering internet brand, Yahoo. She’s like a beautiful blond princess who has come to age to take over her rightful throne as queen. But the question is does she have what it gets to be the CEO of Yahoo? The answer is yes, truly there is more than what meets the eyes. Her looks may fit as the obedient wife of top executives, but she actually has proven that she can do better than other male executives. In fact, the task of saving Yahoo from totally falling apart has been laid upon her shoulder, so hurray to girl power!
Her appointment as Yahoo’s new CEO came as a shock to most and has raised a few brows. But let’s look into the reasons why the board of Yahoo pick her out of all the other hopefuls. I personally believe that she is fully capable of running this gigantic company which is currently facing some management turmoil.
Marissa Mayer actually has a solid 13 years of experience in the internet industry having been hired as the first female and the 20th engineer for Yahoo’s biggest competitor, Google. We should also remember that at the age of 24 back in 1999, she became one of the heads of this Internet giant in no time.
Now why would she give up her long relationship with the company who has provided her all the opportunity to make it big in this industry? Well, aside from the fact that it is one heck of an offer anyone could just wish for there had also been a few unpleasant happenings back in her old company. Because of the reshuffling done last year at Google, her position from being a VP of search production lowered to VP of location and local services.
Last May 18, Yahoo offered her the position and she happily accepted the new job. She was so grateful that the company did not find her pregnancy a hindrance to her tasks. Yes, you read it right, this 37-year-old CEO is actually married to a venture capitalist and real-estate investor, Zachary Bogue and they are expecting their first baby on the 7th of October.
A wife, soon to be mom and a President of one of the world’s biggest companies, can Marissa Mayer juggle all three important rules she have taken into her responsibility? Well, that’s for us to see and for her to prove. She is not the first woman to sit as President for Yahoo. The first ever female CEO for Yahoo was Carol Bartz who served for the company from 2009 to 2011, but Mayer is now considered to be one of the most powerful women in this industry.
I have nothing but best wishes to this vibrant new leader of Yahoo who turned down a teaching career opportunity at upon graduating and stepped up to prove that she can do better than what typical girls can do.
