A pair of men in Houston were arrested after being caught in an attempt to hack and steal a parked Jeep, reports Engadget.
The two reportedly stole more than 30 Jeeps in the area over six months, and are shown in security footage seemingly entering a vehicle with a laptop and starting the car before driving away.
Cars are especially vulnerable to unauthorized connections. The Houston suspects are shown connecting a laptop to either an OBD-II or USB port in the car, which enabled them to bypass the car’s security system and operate the vehicle. Carmakers aim to provide new and improved features to their vehicles in order to entice consumers, but in granting control over certain functions — like ignition — to networked devices, the manufacturers open the door to security issues.
Law enforcement officials and security experts have warned that increasing car connectivity will create new vulnerabilities. The Department of Justice and the FBI warned of the potential for exploits to be discovered and hacked in connected cars. In fact, researchers were recently able to quickly discover an exploit in Mitsubishi’s connected car implementation. BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, expects that by 2021 there will be 381 million connected cars on the road.
Over the past year, there has been a significant uptick in the number of connected cars on the road. And as internet integration becomes more commonplace, the automobile as we know it will transform.
