Natalie Portman as Jackie O in “Jackie.”
Playing America’s most popular First Lady has been a regular job for many of Hollywood’s leading ladies. Natalie Portman is the latest actress to try on one of Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hats in the critically acclaimed new biopic “Jackie,” out Friday — and she certainly won’t be the last.
From Jaclyn Smith and Ginnifer Goodwin to Katie Holmes, here are all the women who have played the classy Jackie O on the screen:
Jaclyn Smith in “Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy”
In 1981 Smith fashioned Kennedy’s famous pink attire in the Golden Globe-nominated biopic. The TV movie follows Jackie O’s years working at a DC newspaper to her life in the White House with JFK.
Sarah Michelle Gellar in “A Woman Named Jackie”
Long before she slayed vampires on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Gellar played a young Jacqueline Bouvier in the 1991 award-winning TV movie.
Jill Hennessy in “Jackie, Ethel, Joan: The Women of Camelot”
Nominated for three Emmys, “The Women of Camelot” set out to expose what really went on in the private lives of the Kennedy women.
Jeanne Tripplehorn in “Grey Gardens”
Tripplehorn proves that even behind one of America’s most elegant women is an eccentric family in this 2009 award-winner.
Minka Kelly in “The Butler”
Kelly has said that it was very intimidating playing such a revered figure. Yet, seen through the eyes of the White House butler, Kelly’s Jackie is kind and resiliant. She even gives one of the former president’s neckties to the butler before she leaves the White House.
Joanne Whalley in “Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis”
Sixteen years ago Whalley took America by storm with her tough, loving, and cosmopolitan portrayal of Jackie O in this made-for-TV movie.
Ginnifer Goodwin in “Killing Kennedy”
Based on Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard‘s best-seller, “Killing Kennedy” features an extremely well-researched view of who Jackie Kennedy really was and a graphic and emotional portrayal of JFK’s assassination.
Stephanie Romanov in “Thirteen Days”
Romanov plays a somber Jacqueline Kennedy in the dramatization of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
Blair Brown in “Kennedy”
Brown was nominated for a Golden Globe and BAFTA TV award for her glamorous portrayal of America’s First Lady in this 1983 American-British miniseries.
Roma Downey in “A Woman Named Jackie”
Before winning multiple awards for “Touched by an Angel,” Downey’s Irish accent slipped through into her Jackie O portrayal.
Jacqueline Bisset in “America’s Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story”
Bisset beautifully played one of Jackie Kennedy’s favorite roles in this 2003 TV movie — mother to JFK Jr.
Katie Holmes in “The Kennedys”
Once you see Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy, you’ll never look at her the same way again. Born to play the icon, Holmes stunned audiences with her beautiful Kennedy wedding look and pink suit.
Kat Steffens in “Parkland”
Steffens had a small but emotional role in “Parkland,” tastefully illustrating the First Lady’s anguish during JFK’s last ride in Texas and inside his 1963 operating room.
