The Tennessee Art League is pleased to present for Nashville’s June Art Crawl the highlights of its annual juried art exhibition along with works of  TAL members. Treasures are bursting forth in the three floors of 808 Bradway. Come explore them in June.

TAL’s main attraction is its Continuing Display of its 47th Annual Central South Art Exhibition (CSAE) on the first floor central galleries.

Premiere, Ethel Smith, & Members Galleries.  The Central South Art Exhibition, with the funding support of the Friends of the Tennessee Art League, continues to be one of the oldest and most prestigious art competitions in Tennessee and throughout the country.  Attracting artists from all over the U.S. who submit hundreds of pieces of artwork starting in January each year, CSAE recognizes about 50 winning artists with cash awards provided by corporate and individual patrons and sponsors.  A total of 268 works of art were submitted in competition this year from 129 artists, who live in 17 states across the country.  CSAE subject matter ranges from the contemporary to traditional.  Multiple formats and forms of expressions are shown; common mediums include watercolor, drawing, photography and sculpture.

CSAE’s 2012 juror, Ruth Burks Crnkovich, is an eminent authority in the world of fine art. For the past ten years, she has professionally served as President and Fine Art Appraiser of CRN Fine Art Services in Chicago and Nashville and is the Director of the Haynes Galleries in Thomaston, Maine and Nashville, Tennessee.  Holding a MA in Art History and a BA in Art History and Studio Art from Governors State University  in Illinois and a Certificate in Fine and Decorative Art Appraising from New York University, she trained at the Art Institute of Chicago in the Prints and Drawings Dept. Ms. Crnkovich has served as a juror at numerous art competitions, and is an honoree in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World numerous times.  Ms. Crnkovich is a Member of the Appraisers Association of America, the American Craft Council, the American Association of Museums and the Society for Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The 47th Annual CSAE opened on Saturday, May 5th.  TAL will host a reception open to the public on Saturday, June 2 from 6 – 9 P.M.  The Exhibition will hang through June 22, 2012.

Best of Show Award:  Ron Adcock, Guitar #3, natural woods and precision hardware, approx. 41″ x 16″.  Ron Adcock, of Fayetteville, TN, was classically trained in wood carving and sculpture on the island of Cyprus, where he grew up.  Wood carving has been a tradition in Cyprus for hundreds of years, and is known for its intricate detail.  As the former drummer for the Seattle band Checkmates, Mr. Adcock was drawn to the Nashville area by the exciting local music scene, and continues to be inspired by it.  He has lived in Middle Tennessee for 16 years with his family.  In addition to his inclusion in CSAE Mr. Adcock currently has a show of large, free form sculptural paintings on view at the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Art League, which includes large works up to 30 feet across.  His other interests include yachting, themes of which are also included in his work.

Sachet Powder and Oil, Cindy Brabec King

James Allen Register Memorial Award:  Cindy Brabec-King, Sachet Powder and Oil, watercolor, 30″ X 22″.  Nationally known and recognized watercolor artist Cindy Brabec-King, of Palisade, Colorado, has been painting for over 25 years. She currently is a signature or a sustaining member to many state and national societies. Her work is accepted to many national, international, state, regional and local exhibits each year.  Cindy also has been honored with the opportunity to jury many exhibits.  Cindy’s work has been included in many publications such as Northlight’s Splash Series vol. 7, 8, 9, and 10; additionally she has been featured in The Artist Magazine, Watercolor Magic, and American Artist Watercolor Magazine. Cindy’s art has been purchased by numerous private and permanent museum collections.

The Chestnut Group Kim Barrick Award:  Peggy Wilkerson, Looking into the Gulf, oil and gold leaf on canvas, 30″ X 24″.  Ms. Wilkerson, of Nolensville, TN, is a longterm member of the Tennessee Art League. She specializes in photography and in representative art (typically landscape scenes with horses), and thinks of abstract painting as a new interest.  She has participated in several previous CSAE exhibitions. Looking into the Gulf was inspired by a sunset Ms. Wilkerson recently viewed on Captiva Island in Florida.

TAL President’s Honor Award: Matthew Deric Gore, Alice in Candyland, oil on canvas, 24″ X 36″.  Mr. Gore received his first set of oil paints at age 10. He took art instruction from a great teacher and friend, Barbara Cox, at Glencliff High School in Nashville. After earning a degree in Visual Communications, he worked for 15 years in commercial arts, as a graphic designer, illustrator, and instructor.  “The craft of painting is important to me. I paint in a traditional style with traditional techniques. I plan my paintings carefully, giving consideration to composition, color and mood. I use a limited pallete, which creates consistency throughout my work. By closely observing light, volume, form, and color, I paint not only objects, places, and people, but also the space and air around them, and, I hope, the mystery within them.  Although I’ve been painting for many years, the transformation of pigment and oil into an image is still like magic to me. It seems like I have captured a bit of the essence of the world and presented it framed upon the wall. This powerful and compelling idea keeps me searching for interesting, evocative subjects to paint.”
