A “riff” is the catchy part of a song that sticks in your head. One of the most recognizable guitar riffs of all time is “Smoke on the water” by Deep Purple.

“Rock grew out of the blues”, says Johnson, “so it really helps to study the blues to get that foundation, rock is basically blues that is speed up and given a steady rhythm”. Claude demonstrates this easy beginner blues rock riff as follows: A major in the open position to a D5 power chord. Johnson says that you can add a C5 power chord to complete the 1 – 4 – 5 chord progression that is used heavily in blues and blues rock music. Johnson continues by performing several variations on this idea that you can easily follow along with and be sounding like a pro in no time at all. Complete guitar TAB’s are available for this easy beginner electric guitar lesson at GuitarControl.com.

The 1 – 4 – 5 chord progression is a sequence of chords that are based on the first, fourth and fifth notes of a major scale and are a staple to the blues guitar sound.
