Cancer Council NSW celebrated the thousands of volunteers who have supported the organisation when the charity marked its 60th birthday in mid-May during National Volunteer Week.

“As a 97 per cent community funded organisation, our volunteers have been with us and supported us as we rolled out the Slip! Slop! Slap! sun safety campaign, contributed to a world first in plain tobacco packaging, and saved 61,000 lives over a twenty year period through research,” said Louisa Fitz-Gerald, Cancer Council Regional Manager.

“Today, we have over 32,500 volunteers and community supporters across NSW who generously donate their time to enable us to provide cancer prevention, advocacy and support programs across the entire cancer journey as well as run events such as Relay for Life and Daffodil Day, and invest over $130 million into research over the past ten years.”

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has just completed its 22nd year and has raised approximately $12 million. The global Relay for Life fundraising campaign has raised a staggering $5billion and is an event promoted by Cancer Council NSW.

Volunteer and Rhodes resident Danny Brombal said, “Volunteering for Cancer Council NSW gives me an opportunity to give back and express how thankful I am to be a cancer survivor.”

“Relay For Life has provided me with inspiring and rewarding experiences which have also led me to discover a passion for Advocacy. I am proud to volunteer for an organisation that has been so active in the cancer cause for the past 60 years.”

It is estimated that six million Australians donate their time as volunteers.
