The Dallas-area recruit replaces Lagaryonn Carson in the class.

The Texas Longhorns picked up a commitment on Tuesday evening from Fort Worth All Saints defensive end Max Cummins.

Offensive line coach Derek Warehime first tweeted about the news, then cornerback commit Josh Thompson welcomed Cummins to the recruiting class:

Not long after, Cummins tweeted out the official news:

Cummins first set an official visit date to Austin for January 27, he told Horns247 in recent days. The 6’6, 255-pounder tripped to Houston this weekend and planned to visit Virginia next weekend before coming to the state capital.

However, he will take his official visit to Austin instead after committing up receipt of his offer.

A December commitment to UConn didn’t survive the coaching change and an offer from Houston.

With the staff unable to keep a spot for Lagaryonn Carson and current pledge Taquon Graham a threat to end up at Oklahoma, the Texas coaches needed another plan at the strong-side position with Bryan Jones and Ryan Johnson looking like long shots.

A consensus low three-star prospect, Cummins isn’t well considered in the rankings, but did have a solid senior season with 72 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.

He’s also seen more interest on the recruiting trail, picking up an offer from Baylor over the weekend.

Of note, Cummins played his junior season at St. Andrew’s in Austin before moving to Fort Worth. He played a fair amount of tight end that year, but looked more comfortable and explosive playing defensive end.

On his Hudl page, Cummins lists a 40-yard dash time of 4.8, a shuttle time of 4.16, a 30-inch vertical leap, and a 500-pound squat.

As a senior, Cummins played inside and outside for All Saints, at times lining up with his hand on the group or in a two-point stance. His quickness looked impressive off the edge — slightly improved from his junior season. At the point of attack, Cummins also displayed some physicality in navigating through traffic.

He can also pack a tremendous punch with his hands:

Cummins is now the 14th commitment in the 2017 class for the Longhorns. The group now ranks No. 31 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
