Cross My Heart Hope to Die

“Vita E Morte” EP

Alpha Pup Records

Cross My Heart Hope to Die is the eclectic art collective/multimedia project of veteran producer DJ Muggs (who’s helmed some of my favorite hip-hop records, including Ice Cube’s “The Predator” and the first two Cypress Hill records), fellow producer Andrew Kline, singer Brevi (who was on 50 Cent’s “Be My Bitch”) and curator/hacker/nerd Sean Bonner. CMHHTD bill themselves as more than just a multimedia project, they want to change your perceptions of art, and challenge your expectations of music while choosing a new path to create something that is truly an experience. Meaning they aren’t just a band. This art collective rests on the balance of each element: art, visuals, music, and the live experience.

Yeah, yeah, yeah… Sure, that sounds fine and all, but “what does it sound like?” These tunes would not be out of place on a David Lynch soundtrack; think Lost Highway. It’s dark and cinematic. It falls somewhere between The Sneaker Pimps, Massive Attack, and Portishead (with a touch of Thundercat in there at times). And their singer, Brevi, reminds me of a saltier version of Shirley Manson from Garbage. I mean, I can’t see Shirley singing “Got A bullet with your name to put your brain up on the floor”. With that said, the lead track “Two Shots” is my favorite song on this four song EP. “Tears Of God” is a close second… although I could do without the DJ scratching. I hate that shit in music like this. It’s my least favorite part of Portishead, too. But all in all, I’m more than excited to hear a full length player from these cats. Hurry it up Bonner…
