McVay is coming over from Washington, where he’s been the offensive coordinator the past three years. The 30-year-old (!) was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ receivers coach in 2008, and has enjoyed a rather meteoric rise since then.

The Rams are the fourth NFL team to hire a new head coach, with the Jacksonville Jaguars going with Doug Marrone, the Buffalo Bills hiring Sean McDermott and the Denver Broncos choosing Vance Joseph.

That leaves the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers as the only teams with head coaching openings. That’s relevant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as they would love to retain defensive coordinator Mike Smith. He’s interviewed with the Chargers, who are going through an extensive head coaching search with many different interviews, but has not interviewed with the 49ers, as far as we know.
