Laguna Seca Notes | MotoGP

This past weekend at Laguna Seca Honda’s Marc Marquez took a comfortable win in first visit to the circuit. He became the first rookie to win in the premier class at Laguna Seca and this was his third win of the season. Marquez leads by 16 points in the World Championship over his teammate Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa, who is nursing a factured collarbone rode to a very respectable 5th place on the very physically demanding track.

Back in 2008 Valentino Rossi made an unforgettable pass on Honda’s Casey Stoner in the Corkscrew. Rossi went on to win that race and the pass has been written into the legend of Rossi. Rossi was running in second place and Marquez made a very similar pass in the same exact spot Rossi did 5 years ago. Marquez came in very hard on the brakes and was just past Rossi a bit as they dropped down into the Corkscrew. Marquez went on to track down Stefan Bradl and create a comfortable gap for the win. The Honda’s had been running stronger at this track than the Yamaha’s, so Rossi was very happy to finish in 3rd place. Alvaro Bautista rode his Honda strong all weekend and challenged Rossi all the way to the end, just narrowly missing the podium. Rossi’s teammate Jorge Lorenzo rode to an exceptional sixth place finish just one week removed from his second surgery on his collarbone. Lorenzo sits in 3rd place in the World Championship just 10 points behind Pedrosa.

The MotoGP season is at the halfway point heading into the summer break before the next race 3 weeks from now in Indianapolis. Marquez certainly has the momentum heading into the break with two wins in a row. Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow had a disappointing race at Laguna and will be looking forward to bounce back at Indianapolis. The 3 week break couldn’t have come at a better time for Pedrosa and Lorenzo to rest and get healthy.
