USDA expects 2014 U.S. winter wheat production to total 1.403 billion bushels, down 9% from the 2013 total of 1.534 billion. Average yield is estimated at 43.1 bushels per acre, compared to 47.4 a year ago. Harvested area is seen at 32.572 million acres, compared to 32.402 million last year. By type, hard red winter is pegged at 746.159 million bushels, slightly larger than the year ago figure of 744.029 million, despite widespread drought in some key U.S. growing areas, soft red winter is estimated at 447.085 million bushels, a 21% drop from 2013′s 564.907 million, and white winter wheat is projected at 209.261 million bushels, 7% less than the 225.317 million produced last year.

Illinois: 43.2 million bushels, compared to 55.61 million in 2013; average yield of 64 bushels per acre, compared to 67 a year ago; harvested area of 675,000 acres, compared to 830,000 last year

Indiana: 25.74 million bushels, compared to 32.12 million in 2013; average yield of 66 bushels per acre, compared to 73 a year ago; harvested area of 390,000 acres, compared to 440,000 last year

Missouri: 43.2 million bushels, compared to 56 million in 2013; average yield of 54 bushels per acre, compared to 56 a year ago; harvested area of 800,000 acres, compared to 1 million last year

Nebraska: 55.38 million bushels, compared to 39.55 million in 2013; average yield of 39 bushels per acre, compared to 35 a year ago; harvested area of 1.42 million acres, compared to 1.13 million last year

Ohio: 38.28 million bushels, compared to 46.55 million in 2013; average yield of 66 bushels per acre, compared to 70 a year ago; harvested area of 580,000 acres, compared to 665,000 last year

South Dakota: 49.05 million bushels, compared to 26.13 million in 2013; average yield of 45 bushels per acre, compared to 39 a year ago; harvested area of 1.09 million acres, compared to 670,000 last year

Wisconsin: 18.46 million bushels, compared to 15.37 million in 2013; average yield of 71 bushels per acre, compared to 58 a year ago; harvested area of 260,000 acres, compared to 265,000 last year
