Total cheese production in the U.S. in December was 973 million pounds up 2.3 percent from December of 2012. Italian type cheese output increased 5.6 percent to 433 million pounds while American type productions slipped 2.2 percent to 376 million pounds

Butter production totaled 161 million pounds in December down 6.9 percent from a year ago.

Other dairy product production in December compared to a year ago:

Nonfat dry milk; 125 million pounds (-20.8%)

Skim milk powders: 58.1 million pounds (+52.4%)

Dry whey; 82.1 million pounds (-8%)

Lactose: 92.3 million pounds (+5%)

Whey protein concentrate: 43.2 million pounds (+12.4%

Regular ice cream 43.1 million gallons (-11%)

Low fat ice cream 21.7 million gallons (-14.3%)

Sherbet 2.19 million gallons (-23.8%)

Frozen yogurt 4.4 million gallons (-2.7%)

For the year, total cheese production in the United States 11.14 billion pounds up 2.3 percent from 2012. American type cheese production for the year totaled 4.4 billion pounds up 1.4 percent with cheddar output 1.6 percent higher at 3.19 billion pounds. Italian type cheese production totaled 4.79 billion pounds for the year up 3.5 percent from 2012. Butter production totaled 1.8 billion pounds in 2013 up just 0.4 percent from 2012.
